Today will be a day long remembered. It saw the return of Star Wars: Rebels to a quality hitherto unknown for the series and is has now seen the official title revealed for Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Announced exclusively over at starwars.com (obviously), the film which is written and directed by Rian Johnson will be titled Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Now, this is notable for two reasons. One, it breaks the sequencing of having the title of the second film in title be centred around a verb (Attack Of The Clones/The Empire Strikes Back) and two, it poses a grammatical conundrum. Jedi is the plural of Jedi. Does The Last Jedi refer to the singular last Jedi in Rey or to a last group of Jedi formed by Luke and Rey? I’m inclined to think the former, but we have simply no idea at this point.

Also of note: the red font. This is a very different, much more sinister look for Star Wars and with the destruction of the New Republic, the First Order is primed to make a larger push on the galaxy with only the small Resistance to… well, resist it. Seems like things will get bloody.

At this point, though, all we know is that the hype train for the next Star Wars movie is officially running. Next stop: Celebration Orlando and the reveal of the first teaser!

Sworn to protect a world that hates and fears her, Alice W. Castle is a trans femme writing about comics. All things considered, it’s going surprisingly well. Ask her about the unproduced Superman films of 1990 - 2006. She can be found on various corners of the internet, but most frequently on Twitter: @alicewcastle
