Writer Saladin Ahmed, and artist Megan Levens, have launched a new fantasy comic called “Starsigns” through Ahmed’s Substack newsletter Copper Bottle. Featuring colors by Kelly Fitzpatrick, and lettering by Shawn Lee, the series imagines what happens when the stars of the zodiac signs fall to Earth, and become human. It is told from the perspective of Rana Fawaaz, a young Arab American food service worker from Brooklyn, and a Taurus (the bull assigned to people born April 19 – May 20.)
On Twitter, Ahmed described the comic as being “about superpowers, fate, and found family.” At io9, he told readers, “Outside of the question of belief I’ve always been fascinated by the iconography around the western zodiac — all of these little ‘stories’ arranged in a wheel, used in turn to tell people stories about themselves. So this is actually project that has been percolating a long time. And in pairing with the absolutely BRILLIANT artist Megan Levens I’ve finally been able make it a reality!”
The first chapter of “Starsigns” can read for free here, while a teaser comic can be read at io9. Subsequent chapters will be made available through a paid subscription to Copper Bottle, which costs $5 a month, or $50 a year.
