Fresh off his Eisner nomination for 2019’s “The Freak,” Matt Lesniewski is teaming with colorist Carlos Badilla for “Static,” a new original graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics. Set for release in comic shops on April 28, 2021, and in bookstores on May 11, 2021, the OGN uses elements of cyberpunk and traditional horror to tell a down to earth story of regret and stagnation.

“Static” follows Emmett, a low level goon hired by Dr. Frankenstein-style “eccentric” scientists. His life has become a series of violent episodes, from the drug dealers tracking him, to the bizarre experiments of his employers. The decades Emmett’s spent living his life have burned him out, leaving him a depressed addict with more regrets than prospects, and that’s before he’s brought into conflict with the doctors he works for.

The title was no accident either. The static nature of Emmett’s existence, and the lack of any clear way out, are at the very heart of the story. Lesniewski tells ComicBook.com, “It [the book] went through many different iterations, but the core idea never went away: a character who one day realized their life had passed them by, leaving them ‘stuck’ in place all this time with no idea how to break from the cycle they’ve been in all these years.”

This is be Lesniewski’s second project with Dark Horse in 2021 announced today: January will also see the release of issue #1 of “Crimson Flower,” a collaboration with “Mind MGMT” creator Matt Kindt, hit shelves.

Previews of the OGN can be seen on ComicBook.com.
