In an exclusive with Syfy Wire, actor Dylan Sprouse (of Disney Channel’s The Suite Life of Zack & Cody fame, in which he starred opposite his brother Cole) revealed that Heavy Metal will publish his comic book writing debut. Illustrated by Diego Yapur (“The Life and Death of Toyo Harada”) and co-written by Joe Harris (“Great Pacific”), “Sun Eater” is inspired in part by folk stories Sprouse was told by his Scandinavian-American grandparents, as well as his own experiences as a practicing Heathen.

‘Sun Eater’ is a nine-issue saga that takes place in ninth century Norway, where a drug-addled warrior sacrifices his leg to the Gods. In return he is fused with a parasitic beast, giving him the power to rescue his son from his sworn enemies — history’s first Norwegian king and his five personal guards. The result is a grim and bloody adventure — a dark metaphor for drug addiction, selfishness, and the children it affects.

“I love fantasy-action and I wanted to create something that would appeal to newer fans of the genre while tackling an elevated story,” Sprouse explained. “The characters I wrote are from actual tales and bardic songs, and the story is about the adult, dark, grotesque, and somber world of Sun Eater and its desperate, faulty protagonist.”

“Sun Eater” is currently available for pre-order from Heavy Metal (with some interesting add-ons, like a 4-pack of mead from Sprouse’s Brooklyn-based All-Wise Meadery). It will be available in select comic book stores on August 7.
