Superheroes For Hospice – Cheap Comics for Charity

The first Superheroes for Hospice comics sale of the year is this Saturday in West Orange, New Jersey.  If you live anywhere near northern New Jersey, this is an event you won’t want to miss! Over 100,000 comics will be on sale for bargain-bin prices, and all of the money goes to a worthwhile cause.  There will also be a local dealer selling rare Silver and Bronze Age comics; local comics professionals selling their wares and doing sketches; and the “Get Into Comics Lecture Series” featuring free discussions on topics like making comics, the legacy of Joe Kubert, and the digital comics revolution.

The collection is mostly modern to late Bronze Age, with books from nearly every publisher, including DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Image, IDW, Valiant, Vertigo, Icon, and many more.  Most of the collection is in good to near mint condition, some are even bagged and boarded already.  You can find complete or near complete runs on many popular titles, and a healthy selection of hundreds more.  I can tell you from experience that there are a lot of hidden gems in the collection, and more are being donated all the time.

There’s something here for every kind of comic book fan.   You can find those last few issues to complete your run of “Preacher,” “Spider-Man” or “Batman.”  Pick up a few issues of something new, like that indie series you keep hearing about but never got around to reading.  Or, if you’re a dedicated collector, hunt through the boxes to find those gems hidden in the riff-raff!  The prices are relative to how many comics you buy.  Starting at $2, prices quickly drop to as low as twenty-five cents a comic!

The comics themselves aren’t the only attraction.  Several local comics professionals will have tables, including Archie editor and writer Paul Castiglia (Archie’s Weird Mysteries), comics artist and historian Arlen Schumer (The Silver Age of Comic Book Art), artist and toy designer Paris Cullins (Blue Beetle, Blue Devil), colorist and webcomic creator Mindy Indy (Deadpool Max, Misfortune Cookie) and several sketch artists, including “Zombify,” your zombie portrait specialists. A visit by the cosplay troupe “East Coast Avengers” will provide atmosphere, while all throughout the day, the “Get Into Comics Lecture Series” will be running nearby.  One of my favorite parts of the event, it’s a free series of discussions on many comics-related topics:

  • “Perfecting the Comic Book Script,” with Don. E. Smith, Jr.
  • “Get Started: Selling Your Comic Art at Conventions!!!” with Mindy Indy
  • “Realism VS Cartooning: The War Between Comic Art Styles” with Paris Cullins
  • “The Savage Style of Joe Kubert!” with Arlen Shumer
  • “Digital Comics: Changing Our Medium… For the Better?” with Christian Rubiano

For those of us who need fewer comics in our lives, not more, SFH accepts donations year-round, and the full Overstreet value of your donation is tax-deductible.

Superheroes for Hospice is this Saturday, April 20th, from 10 AM to 6 PM at the Barnabas Health Corporate Office at 95 Old Short Hills Road in West Orange, New Jersey.  To find out more, visit their website or contact SFH mastermind Spiro Ballas at SBallas@BarnabasHealth.org
