DC Comics have announced “Superman: Space Age,” a three-part prestige miniseries by writer Mark Russell (“Second Coming”), and artist Mike Allred (“Silver Surfer”). Set before 1985’s ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths,’ the series will follow a young Clark Kent as he learns of the imminent end of the world, and decides to come out as Superman. It was not specified if Laura Allred, Allred’s wife and colorist, will be part of the creative team.

Russell commented, “This is a dream project for me. Not only because I get to work with a genius like Mike Allred, but because I’ve always found Superman such a philosophically fascinating character, one which forces us to ask how different would the world be if we chose to be our best selves?”

Allred quipped he is “super pumped to finally reveal what we’ve been working on in secret for so long,” stating it is “easily my biggest project for DC yet. Working with Mark Russell and his brilliant script has been a blast! Packed with head-spinning iconography, top tier characters, twists, thrills, and chills, resulting in a powerful instant classic epic! It’s been simultaneously intimidating and inspiring to meet the challenge of illustrating this phenomenal project!”

Similar to Russell and Sean Izaakse’s “Fantastic Four: Life Story,” the series will see the decades pass, and Superman wondering if “each new danger” will be “the one that will kill him and everyone he loves.” Russell’s tendency towards social commentary in all of his projects will remain intact, as “Superman realizes that even good intentions are not without their backlash, as the world around him transforms into a place as determined to destroy itself as he is to save it.” DC promises the book will be “an unforgettable journey through U.S. history and culture starring our beloved characters.”

“Superman: Space Age” #1 will be released on Tuesday, July 26, and retail at 80 pages for $9.99. Issues #2 and #3 will follow respectively in September and November. In the meantime, you can check out more of Allred’s art, as well as variant covers by Steve Rude and Nick Derington, here.
