Via Newsarama, DC Comics have announced “Sword of Azrael,” a new six-issue limited series starring Jean-Paul Valley, by writer Dan Watters, and artist Nikola Čižmešija. The series will pick up with Jean-Paul, now retired from being the pawn of the Order of St. Dumas, and living at a monastery in Europe, until a young woman appears, asking for his help. After learning she has undergone the same brainwashing he did, Jean-Paul reclaims the mantle of Azrael to protect her from the deadly assassins now pursuing her.

The series will coincide with the 30th anniversary of Azrael’s debut in “Batman: Sword of Azrael” #1 (published August 11, 1992), by Dennis O’Neil and Joe Quesada. The character is best known for becoming Batman’s troubled successor after being paralyzed by Bane during the 1993 storyline ‘Knightfall,’ but also headlined his own series (which ran for 100 issues) from 1995 and 2003. The character was killed off at the end of the run, but returned to life after 2011’s ‘New 52’ reboot.

The book marks a reunion for Watters and Čižmešija with the character, having created the “Batman: Urban Legends” #8-10 story ‘Sword of Azrael: Dark Knight of the Soul,’ which saw Jean-Paul return to Gotham after a lengthy hiatus to battle the villainous Poor Fellow. DC will reprint the arc for any readers who missed it in a 40-page one-shot, also named “Sword of Azrael: Dark Knight of the Soul.”

“Sword of Azrael” #1 and “Sword of Azrael: Dark Knight of the Soul” #1 will be released simultaneously on August 2.
