Via SuperHeroHype, Dark Horse Comics have announced a new four-part Hellboy Universe series called “The Sword of Hyperborea,” by writers Mike Mignola and Rob Williams, artist Laurence Campbell, and colorists Quinton Winter and Dave Stewart.
“The Sword of Hyperborea” will chronicle the titular sword’s journey through history, tracking the blade as it changes wielders, including previous Hellboy Universe characters like Gall Dennar, Sir Edward Grey, and Agent Ted Howards. The solicitation teases that the changing of wielders “has been no accident.”
Williams stated “each issue introduces a new character and reveals their journey as the sword-bearer as that weapon passes through time. And we get to enjoy a few old ‘B.P.R.D.’ favourites along the way.” He described “getting the chance to collaborate with Laurence Campbell and Mike, and to tell new stories with new characters in that world [as] hugely exciting,” because he “was a major fan of the B.P.R.D. series, and of Hellboy and the Mignolaverse in general.”
In a statement, Mignola described Williams and Campbell’s work on the series — “building on what’s been established and expanding in great new directions, creating new characters, playing with different time periods and location” — as being “exactly the kind of stuff that’s going to keep this world alive and breathing.”
“The Sword of Hyperborea” #1 is scheduled for release on January 12, with a primary cover by Campbell, and a variant cover by Christopher Mitten. You can check out Mitten’s variant here.
