Raina Telgemeier added another award to her already impressive collection. Telgemeier’s 2016 book, ‘Ghosts,’ received the third annual Dwayne McDuffie Award for Kids Comics, which was presented at the Ann Arbor Comic Arts Festival. While accepting the award, Telgemeier highlighted 10 other books for young audiences, and then announced she had brought multiple copies of each title (that she had personally purchased) to give away to young readers in attendance. “In the spirit of sharing the love of comics, I decided to take this opportunity to share some of my favorite comics with the audience at A2CAF, in the hope that they will find more amazing work to discover,” Telgemeier said of the books.

The 10 titles given away were:

‘NewsPrints’ by Ru Xu
‘Lowriders in Space Book 1’ by Cathy Camper and Raul the Third
‘The Shadow Hero’ by Gene Luen Yang and Sonny Liew
‘Little White Duck’ by Na Liu
‘Lola: A Ghost Story’ by J. Torres and Elbert Orr
‘Giants Beware’ by Rafael Rosado and Jorge Aguirre
‘Phoebe and her Unicorn Book 1’ by Dana Simpson
‘Lucky Penny’ by Yuko Ota and Ananth Hirsh
‘Ms. Marvel Volume 1: No Normal’ by G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona
‘How to Find a Fox’ by Nilah Magruder

‘Ghosts’ tells the story of two sisters exploring a new town, while the younger has been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. The pair goes on a hunt to meet one of the ghosts that supposedly haunt their new home. Our own Matt Garcia said, “[Telgemeier] takes on a dark and grim subject matter and is not only frank about the realities of it but also makes it far more comprehensible and comforting… It’s easy to get wrapped up and invested in these worlds she’s creating,” in his review of the title.
