Above, you can see the first trailer to “Ant-Man” – which I’m almost certain you’ve seen already – but this two minute spot has at least left the cross set of comic fans on Multiversity’s staff a little…underwhelmed. In fact, based off the response, you’d think our staff had watched a trailer for a Troma adaptation of “Air Bud”, not Marvel’s attempt at making an “Ant-Man” movie with Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas. I’m not sure what the general response is, besides some massive complaints I spied in the YouTube comments, but my take is this: Marvel uses the first trailers to introduce concepts, and they almost completely remove all personality and feel from them as well. They really are introductions. Because of that, I in no way expect this to resemble the final film.
Does that mean this movie’s going to be great? No. Not at all. It’s not the best trailer ever, but it does make fun of itself and introduce the idea which – admittedly – has always been a weird as hell movie idea (and comic one, really). But I though the first trailer for “Guardians of the Galaxy” was not good at all, and I could watch that movie all day, every day. I still think this has a chance to be great, and I don’t think a two minute trailer that is meant to introduce the concept of freaking Ant-Man should dissuade anyone really.
Now if it sucks in July, then it sucks in July. But for now, I’ll give it a shot. “Ant-Man” arrives July 17th. Mark your calendars, if only so you can come back and tell me I’m an idiot.
