This weekend at the box office, The Avengers has apparently earned around $103.2 million at the box office, officially pushing the film past the $1 billion mark for its worldwide sales after just 19 days of release.

According to Box Office Mojo, the Avengers has now earned a whopping $1,002,082,000, making it currently the 11th highest grossing film of all time without adjusting for inflation. This is the first Marvel film to do so, and not only that but this now puts The Avengers ahead of the previously highest grossing superhero film The Dark Knight and it’s $1 billion plus box office return. Given that there are still assumedly weeks and weeks worth of this film playing, one might assume that it could work its way into the top 10 soon enough despite the 50% drop from its opening weekend.

Basically, The Avengers is printing money at this point. So I guess the only question now is what is Marvel going to do with all that money? Or even, as some other commentators might speculate, what should they do with it?

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
