Matt Reeves is in talks to replace Ben Affleck as director on The Batman. Affleck recently stepped down from the director’s chair, but reassured everyone, again, that the film is still definitely getting made, pinky promise.

Reeves was frontrunner on the previously reported short list and according to sources has made a commitment to join the project, although a deal is not signed as of yet. As a Director, he is most well known for Cloverfield and taking over the Planet of the Apes prequels. Reeves also co-created Felicity with J.J. Abrams. He is currently in post production on War of the Planet of the Apes so there will be plenty of time to gear up for helming The Batman.
The director will take over a tumultuous pre-production which has already seen several delays as well as Affleck trying to temper expectations since the film was even announced. The script penned by Affleck and DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns recently saw rewrites by Argo co-writer Chris Terio. Depending on where you look, it’s either getting entirely thrown out, or is making everyone happy.
Affleck is still very much contributing to the direction of the film. He will retain his producer credit and as of now still co-wrote the script. It will be interesting to see how much Reeves will be able to add his personal touch while working within Affleck and WB’s vision for the film.
