Via Screen Rant, Dark Horse Comics have announced “The Change,” a superhero graphic novel created by actress and writer Whoopi Goldberg, with co-writer Jaime Paglia (Eureka, The Flash), artist Sunkanmi Akinboye (“Windmaker,” “E.X.O.: The Legend of Wale Williams”), colorist Alexandria Batchelor, and letterer Frank Cvetkovic. Due out this November, the book follows Isabel Frost, a wife and grandmother who becomes the titular superhero after experiencing a profound change in her life.

Per the site, Isabel has an “amazing support network of family and fellow gamers,” but life has “become stagnant” for her. “But as her body adjusts to menopause, Isabel finds herself developing powerful abilities. With the assistance of her best friend and her comic book-loving grandson, Isabel decides to embrace the new direction of her life and become the Change.” The synopsis does not specify what kind of powers Isabel has, although the cover by Khary Randolph (“Excellence”) shows her emitting a vapor from her hands.

Goldberg, 67, first hinted at the project in 2021, which was originally conceived as a screenplay. “Since I was a little kid, I’ve been obsessed with superheroes,” she told Variety. “They’re all saving the earth all the time. But do you know who’s really going to save the earth? Old Black women.” The book marks her first comic, although it’s far from her first novel, having made her debut with 1992’s Alice in Wonderland reimagining Alice (illustrated by John Rocco.) Her other books include the non-fiction titles Book, Is It Just Me? Or Is It Nuts Out There?, and Whoopi’s Big Book of Relationships, as well the 2008-2012 children’s series Sugar Plum Ballerinas.

“The Change” will be released on November 28.
