The CW Absolutely Loses Its Mind With First “Legends of Tomorrow” Trailer

Some context. I started writing for Multiversity Comics by, among other duties, doing a recap column for the first season of Arrow. It was one of the most mediocre experiences I’ve ever endured and I skipped out on season two and three due to a combination of college and general disinterest. As a result, I haven’t caught up on what’s been going down in The CW’s DC shows, even though I’ve heard good things. Today, The CW released the first trailer for its upcoming Legends of Tomorrow series and I for one cannot believe this show is happening.

The trailer is about four minutes long but so much happens. Vandal Goddamn Savage has amassed an army for himself and so The Flash and The Arrow or whatever have teamed up a Who’s Who of properties DC doesn’t want to turn into movies. This group consists of Martin Stein as Firestorm, Brandon Routh as a dorky Atom, the Lazarus Pit-resurrected White Canary, Captain Cold, Heatwave, and honest-to-god Hawkgirl. Then they turn around to get accosted by a snarky British guy who you think is going to be a recast Constantine or something. Instead, he says the funniest line I’ve ever heard from a DC Comics adaptation: “My name is Rip Hunter.”

If I sound overtly giddy, it’s because my past experience with The CW’s DC shows was Oliver Queen screaming the phrase “MY CITY!” while refusing to be called Green Arrow. Two years later and fucking Rip Hunter is telling a team with Hawkgirl on it to go fight Vandal Savage in their own TV series. This is wild. DC should just put every character they’re not going to let near Zack Snyder on this show. End the first episode with the team posing and standing strong just to have Jack Knight slowly float down next to them in complete silence. Have him carry in Tommy Monaghan too. Who cares.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will air sometime in 2016. The 2012 version of myself will be cackling through the time stream until then.
