OK. Lets talk about “Age of Ultron” #10 a bit, yes? Spoilers, obviously.
A little while ago, Marvel made a slight goof in announcing “Age of Ultron” #10UC, a comic that was actually called “Hunger” and whose purpose would not be revealed. Then, when ‘Ultimate Avengers Disassembled’ began with the same writer as “Hunger” – Joshua Fialkov – we came up with a theory. If you read the site, you’re probably familiar with it as we’ve posted about it only a hundred times since then with other pieces of evidence, but it’s basically that an Ultimate Dust-Up was coming to make way for something new, perhaps featuring Galactus. What was our verbage again? “Something about the 616 Galactus probably wanting to eat the Ultimate Universe.”
And, hey, how about that ending to “Age of Ultron” #10, in which a bunch of multiversal walls break down and the 616 Galactus ends up in the Ultimate Universe looking at Miles Morales?
But that’s not all.
With a link between the Ultimate Universe and the 616 now being more obvious than ever, it would seem that our theory that Miles Morales being on the Mighty Avengers team is even more credible. And it’s probably not the 616 Miles, either, but rather the actual Miles Morales, making his debut in the Marvel 616.
Which would imply that Miles is now in the regular Marvel 616.
Which would imply that there is no more Ultimate Universe.
There is a lot to think about with “Age of Ultron” right now. It would appear that the book was little more than a segue between the end of Bendis’ “Avengers” run and a bunch of things to come in the Marvel U, including some new variation of Ultron, the coming of Angela and now our previously discussed Ultimate/616 Dust-Up.
If Miles joins the 616, I doubt you’d see too much sorrow over the loss of that line. It has been notably a shadow of its former self for some time now, with “Ultimate Spider-Man” being the one singular stand-out of quality and excitement. This isn’t to pan the other books, because Brian Wood is in fact doing a great job at “Ultimate X-Men” — but when you consider the line wide event that just took over the books, the consistency of the entire line is questionable, and the original purpose of the Ultimate line was to tell stories that couldn’t exist in the Marvel U, to reinvent old classics for a new era of fans. Outside of Spider-Man/Miles, that’s not really happening. Just consolidating things and keeping Miles would make sense.
Or, there is something coming else coming at the end of the year. That is a possibility too.
We’ve been covering this pretty closely since we first unveiled our theory, one that has been shared on other sites (though not always with credit to us — it’s ok, we’re not bitter!), so we’ll keep you posted on whatever comes next. However, if nothing else this will teach Marvel to be much more careful with their solicits, because if there is one easy way to ruin all of your big plans, it is to let folks like us analyze them to uncover all their secrets. Like we just did. (Insert a mic drop here or something.)
