There certainly are things about fans that can be troubling, but let it not be said that when passionate people come together they certainly produce amazing things.

So, a live action film version of Akira (that almost starred Keanu Reeves as Kaneda) is not happening, even though the filmmakers are still chipping away at its creation. In the meantime, however, a group of passionate fans have come together to bring Otomo’s colossal and staple manga to life on their own via the Akira Project. Launched out of an Indie Gogo project from two years ago, the crowd sourced video that took an apparent year and a half in post-production alone is online now — and, wow, it is truly something incredible. Split between a recreation of the famous introduction to the story coupled with a few choice scenes, it’s a great testament of love towards the comic and its film — and is certainly exciting to watch.

I can’t imagine that a full film is in the cards for this production, let alone a fully accurate film (the anime itself leaves it a good deal of the comic, for all the obvious reasons of time and limitation), but I do wish this team the best if they go forward with more. It’s definitely impressive what they’ve done so far.

You can watch the live action trailer above, and check out more about this at the official website.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
