Sometimes, you just can’t make this stuff up. The upcoming “The Fantastic Four” movie reboot from director Josh Trank and stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and, controversially, Michael B. Jordan has been off the charts with its ability to draw the ire of comic fans, and frankly, I love it. Some of the decisions are pretty easily defensible (I still think Jordan will be an awesome Johnny Storm), but the latest news is going to make many a FF purist lose their minds when they first hear it.
You see, Collider interviewed Toby Kebbell – the excellent actor who is playing Doctor Doom – about “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”, and in the process got some pretty interesting info about his version of the character. Namely, Kebbell shared:
– Doom’s name will be Victor Domashev
– He will be a “very anti-social programmer”
– “Doom” will be his user name on blogging sites
Now, on one hand I have the insane urge to just write “HAHAHA!” over and over in response, but let’s look at this really. The first part is fine. Naming a person “Victor Von Doom” is the type of thing that only really works in comics. That’s totally cool. But trying to reconcile the difference between the Latveria ruling, metal mask wearing supervillain from the comics with a dude who may or may not sit in a castle all day, every day commenting on HuffPo articles about GamerGate is really hard to do. It’s utterly spectacular, and it finds this whole production taking its troll game to an entirely different level.
But you know what? I’m in. Get crazy, “The Fantastic Four”. You have a good cast, you have a good director, and you have Doom becoming a Redditor. Everyone knows true evil really resides on the internet today. I’m interested to see how this pans out, because it’s either really going to work, or it’s going to be a legendarily great bad movie night movie. Paging Rifftrax!
