The Finale to the Arkham Video Game Series is Announced: Arkham Knight [Video]

Announced via Game Informer, it looks like the sequel we all expected is finally arriving.

The true sequel to 2011’s Arkham City (which makes Arkham Origin #0, I guess), the third and final installment of the Batman videogame franchise will be Arkham Knight, which is taunted as “the end [of] the Dark Knight’s journey” by Game Informer magazine. While it’s largely hush-hush as to what most of the game wil feature for obvious reasons, the game will feature villains Scarecrow, Penguin, Two-Face, Harley Quinn and more, all back for more throwdowns and beatdowns in a new area of Gotham that is apparently much larger than Arkham City.

Oh! And you’ll get to drive the Batmobile. Whaaaat.

Here’s the official (and, honestly, rather incredible) trailer:

If that trailer isn’t a Batman-fans wet dream, I don’t know what else could be. And the trailer also makes Batman look/sound more like Superman than Superman did in Man of Steel, so that’s something.

So it looks like the game has plans to pay-off some of the things left as background elements in previous installments, such as Azrael’s warning in City (if you happen to track him down and get that secret cutscene) which is alluded to in the opening of the trailer.

There’s also the looming element of Hush on the loose, so he could be coming back as many suspect. Though I’d hedge my bets closer to Azrael’s “gates of Hell opening up” stuff. That seems much more dire than ol’ bandage face.

The only real downside here is that you apparently can only play it on PS4, XBOX One or PC — and for those of us being obstinate about upgrading our gaming machines (until they make PS4 backwards compatible, dammit!), this is a touch frustrating. But it’s also the very definition of First World Problems, so hey, whatever.

So it’s unclear who is involved with the new game outside of Rocksteady Studios. I’d assume Kevin Conroy is back even if he didn’t offer a voice in Origin, but Hamill has stated he was done with the Joker (Joker was voiced by Troy Baker in Origin). The real loss, though, would be Paul Dini, who was not back for Origin and under the impression Warner Bros and Rocksteady didn’t want him back for another sequel. With so much information wrapped up tightly about Knight so far, it’s possible he’s back — but, then again, also likely that he’s not.

We’ll keep you informed as new information arises, but hey — driving the Batmobile through Gotham? That sounds kinda neat.
