It’s been a long time coming, but it is certainly exciting to see: following a one-shot in June, Eric Powell’s “The Goon” will be returning in July for “Occasion of Revenge,” a new mini-series starring everyone’s favorite bruiser.
The first of quite a few planned minis, “The Goon” will be adopting the same format as fellow Dark Horse mainstay “Hellboy,” changing from the ongoing format it had adopted back to a series of connected minis. “Occasion of Revenge” will be the first mini, and will be a less light-hearted book than we’d seen recently, with Eric Powell remarking on CBR that it would be more in the vein of “Chinatown” than what we’d seen recently from the series. In addition to that, Powell will also start coloring the series on his own starting with the new mini-series, with series color artist Dave Stewart’s final issue being the “One for the Road” issue in June.
“The Goon” has been Eric Powell’s long-running series in comics, certainly becoming one of the most important figures in independent/creator-owned books. While the movie that was Kickstartered hasn’t seen any public progress since September 2013, it’s great to see the return of the character and Powell to comics with him.
“One for the Road” hits stores in June, with “Occasion for Revenge” beginning in July. If you’ve never read “the Goon” before, this series (as with generally every issue) is designed to be perfect for new readers who’ve never met the Goon before — no backstory required. That said, if it’s like “Chinatown,” prepare for some sadness.
