As announced at Newsarama, the original Guardians of the Galaxy are coming back this October.
“Guardians 3000” will see the return of the original line-up of the Guardians with Major Vance Astro, Starhawk, Martinex, Captain Charlie-27 and Yondu all teaming up again to protect the future. Fans of the Guardians will recognize these guys from the 70s as the original team that hung out in the far reaches of space saving the universe, inspired by the actions of the current heroes. It was thanks to a nice little bit of history tweaking that when the Guardians formed outside of “Annihilation” with none of these characters, we got to see the “real” original team that inspired the future team.
And it just so happens that one of the writers who helped bring the “real” original Guardians team, the ones who will be featured in the upcoming film, is signed on to do this book as well: Dan Abnett. Alongside artist Gerardo Sandoval, this is Abnett’s big return to cosmic after a short story in the back of “Guardians of the Galaxy” #14, in which it was teased that the future Guardians team would have some relevance again. This is how.
The original short story, which served as a “pilot” for the ongoing, notes that there are issues with reality, something we’ve been seeing a lot of in recent years coming out of “Age of Ultron.” The book will also remain entwined with the other cosmic books as well, as Mike Marts will edit the book and help keep these various threads together.
Oh, and the Badoon are back. Damn those Badoon!
Given Abnett’s history in the cosmic comics, “Guardians 3000” seems like a smart move. It’s just too bad there’s that bunch of a-holes running around using their name.
“Guardians 3000” launches in October, and will be the seventh cosmic title that Marvel is putting out. Seems like big things are coming in Marvel’s cosmic realm, doesn’t it?
