Via THR, DC Black Label imprint has announced “The Nice House on the Lake,” a new 12-part horror comic by writer James Tynion IV (“The Department of Truth”), artist Álvaro Martínez Bueno (“Justice League Dark”), and colorist Jordie Bellaire (“Future State: Wonder Woman”). The first issue will feature a card stock variant by Tynion’s “The Department of Truth” collaborator, Martin Simmonds.

The series will follow a group of 30-somethings traveling to a lake house following an invite by their mutual friend Walter. The group, ready for a change of scenery following a tough year, consists of people Walter has known from periods across his life; some met him in childhood, some in college, and some only met him at a recent party. When they arrive at the lake house, the truth about Walter and the fate of the world is revealed.

Speaking to THR, Tynion said “There is a loss when you enter your 30s there that you know you will never get back even though you long for it,” explaining that the desire to “[recreate] the perfect moment in your life but needing to grow up and make your own way, that tension is the heart of the book.” DC Comics’ Senior Editor, Chris Conroy, stated “We greenlit this story before the entire world slipped into a global pandemic that put everyone on Earth into isolation and replicated that feeling of alienation worldwide… and now we have the visceral, haunting horror story that will hopefully help everyone process what we’ve all just gone through.”

There is the possibility of the series continuing past its 12 issues, with DC describing the limited series as a “season,” with its success set to decide whether further seasons are developed.

“The Nice House on the Lake” #1 is scheduled for release on June 1. You can check out a preview double page here.
