Marvel Comics have announced, via AIPT, a new five-part miniseries, “The Punisher vs. Barracuda,” by writer Ed Brisson, artist Declan Shalvey and colorist Mat Lopes.

The solicit for the first issue details that while Frank Castle closes in on mob hitman hiding in the Deep South, there is a jailbreak in Miami with one of the escapees being the “most sadistic and dangerous of killers,” Barracuda. The mini-series marks the debut of Barracuda in the mainstream Marvel Universe, having first appeared in Garth Ennis and Goran Parlov’s “The Punisher” run under Marvel’s MAX imprint.

Speaking to AIPT, Brisson said that the “book has been in the cooker for a bit,” and that he can’t wait for readers to to see what the team have been “mixing up.” He stated that Frank having to hunt Barracuda in “sunny Miami” is a “a fun switch from the gritty streets of NYC,” continuing “Shalvey pointed out the change in scenery has given me the chance to do a different looking Punisher book. Still very much a moody and intense book, everything I want in a Punisher series but employing a different ‘neon-noir’ sensibility with the wonderful Mat Lopes.” Shalvey described how Brisson is one of a “very short list of writers at Marvel” he’s been desperate to work with, having been a fan of “his crime work [in particular]” and was always hoping to “get a chance someday.”

“The Punisher vs. Barracuda” #1 will be released in April.
