The last time we saw Thanos (in continuity – Lockjaw & The Pet Avengers doesn’t count) was during 2006/2007’s Annihilation event. Why was that the last time we saw him? Well, Drax killed him, that’s why.
But staying with the grand theme of comics in that no one stays dead, Thanos is returning in the pages of issues #24 and #25 of Guardians of the Galaxy. That’s not all though, as his return is kicking off a brand new Marvel Cosmic event: The Thanos Imperative, with a prelude issue titled The Thanos Imperative: Ignition leading the way in May.
Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning are in control of this new initiative, and I wouldn’t have it any other way (save Keith Giffen running it, maybe). They are currently writing both Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy and are the architects of the Cosmic side of Marvel as a whole. They insist that this “epic story forms a climax to many of the tales we’ve been spinning in the cosmic corner of the Marvel Universe for the last three years,” which is reason enough to pick up the series.
But it also stars Thanos, the Mad Titan, Marvel’s very own Darkseid like character. That in itself is enough to sell me. Don’t miss the start of this series, as it will likely have ramifications across the Marvel universe sooner rather than later.
