Via io9, Archie Comics announced “Archie & Friends: All Action,” a one-shot parodying Japanese mecha fiction by writer Daniel Kibblesmith, artist Ryan Jampole, colorist Glenn Whitmore, and letterer Jack Morelli. The comic sees Riverdale come under attack from a giant monster, and Archie having to choose between “Betty with her rugged, self-built mech, or Veronica with her hi-tech, hi-end robotics.” Kibblesmith commented he watched all of Neon Genesis Evangelion to prepare for writing the comic, which hits stands April 5.

– Tapas Media founder and CEO Chang Kim is leaving the webcomics platform. On LinkedIn, Kim stated he doesn’t have any plans yet, but intends to “stay within the startup world,” either as a consultant or by starting a new company. Kim launched Tapas as Comic Panda in 2012, and sold it to South Korean media company Kakao in 2021.

– Marvel shed more light on their upcoming Free Comic Book Day titles, revealing the day’s “Marvel’s Voices” book will feature a new Ironheart story by John Jennings and Paris Alleyne, that will introduce a new foe for Riri Williams, Khem. All four of Marvel’s titles for the day will be released on Saturday, May 6.

– Marvel have also launched ‘Karma in Love,’ a new installment of the “Love Unlimited Infinity Comic” series starring the New Mutant, by writer/artist Trung Le Nguyen and colorist Tríona Farrell. As Nguyen explains, the comic changes Karma’s civilian name change from Xi’an to Xuân, because “the ‘sh’ sound in ‘Xi’an’ doesn’t exist in the Vietnamese language.” He adds, “I changed very few letters, but I think it helps give her a fresh start. That’s why I named her ‘Xuân’ [pronounced ‘Swun’]. It means ‘Spring.'” “Love Unlimited Infinity” runs weekly and exclusively on the Marvel Unlimited app.

– AMC announced the upcoming eighth season of Fear the Walking Dead will be its last; that Maggie and Negan’s spin-off Dead City will premiere in June, before The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon; and that Rick Grimes and Michonne’s spin-off series will premiere in 2024. Fear the Walking Dead, which launched in 2015, will begin the first half of its 12-part final season on May 14; the remaining six episodes will air later this year.

Shortcomings, the upcoming film version of Adrian Tomine’s graphic novel, directed by Randall Park, will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The film will be screened daily at various theaters in Park City, Utah, from Sunday, January 22, to Tuesday, January 24, and again on Friday, January 27, in Park and Salt Lake City. The movie will also be available to purchase to watch online for a limited time beginning January 24.

– Angela Bassett won the Award for Best Supporting Actress, Motion Picture, at last night’s Golden Globes for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Her win marks the first major acting award for a movie based on a Marvel comic. Bassett thanked her family and the film’s creators before honoring Chadwick Boseman in her acceptance speech, saying “We have joy in knowing that with this historic Black Panther series, it is a part of his legacy that he helped to lead us. We showed the world what Black unity, leadership and love looks like, behind and in front of the camera. To the Marvel fans, thank you for embracing these characters and showing us so much love.” You can read the full list of the year’s winners at Variety.

– Finally, several comics professionals have launched Cartoonists Against COVID, to protest against the widespread marginalization of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is still ongoing. The site lists two main priorities: to “highlight the work of artists who can’t make it out to conventions or large in-person gatherings, primarily disabled, high risk and immunocompromised artists and make sure they can still make a living by having their information collected in one place;” and to “demand organizers of comic conventions” or similar events “take COVID seriously.” Members of the group include editor Claire Napier, and “Artie and the Wolf Moon” creator Olivia Stephens.
