– DC Comics announced its Gold Title for Free Comic Book Day 2018: a chapter from the upcoming installment of “DC Super Hero Girls,” titled ‘A Date with Disaster.’ The move’s likely a result of the DC Super Hero Girls line’s incredible success at reaching young readers. In this installment, Barbara Gordon must contend with a surprising new challenge, as her dad re-enters the dating game. This year’s Free Comic Book Day is May 5.
– AMC’s The Walking Dead is going to run long during its Feb. 25 return, devoting 82 minutes to an episode in which a long-time character will meet their end. We’ll avoid more spoilers here, in case you’re not caught up, but you can read the full breakdown at The Hollywood Reporter. We can tell you that, according to star Andrew Lincoln, this will be The Walking Dead’s biggest death yet.
– In other Walking Dead news, The Hollywood Reporter also stated that stuntman John Bernecker’s mother is filing a wrongful death suit against AMC and other parties. Bernecker fell to his death on-set in July. The lawsuit alleges that AMC “orchestrated and enforced a pattern of filming and producing The Walking Dead cheaply, and ultimately, unsafely.”
– Darby Pop plans to publish a Bruce Lee-centric comic, titled “Bruce Lee: The Walk of the Dragon,” with the involvement and support of Lee’s daughter, Shannon Lee. Previews World has an interview with Shannon, in which she talks about pitching the project, working with artist Brandon McKinney to ensure the book accurately conveyed her father’s physicality and movements, and introducing Bruce Lee to new audiences. The book is out March 28.
– Newsweek showed off the first page of the lost Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster story that’s coming to the “Action Comics #1000” hardcover, featuring a Superman confronted by ‘Too Many Heroes!’. The Newsweek story also contains more details about where those lost pages might have come from.
– The #ColoristAppreciationDay hashtag trended on Twitter yesterday, providing recognition to a number of wonderful colorists, and providing the rest of us with a slew of colorful pictures and pages to ogle.
– Writer Steve Orlando commented on the surprising, and slightly contentious, return (spoilers ahead) of Promethea within the pages of “Justice League of America.” Orlando told The Hollywood Reporter that “Promethea seemed like the perfect fit to add to the tapestry of the DC Universe in a new, exciting, and transformational way.”
– In non-Walking Dead comics-to-TV news, the rumors of Disney XD’s Spider-Man’s demise seem to have been exaggerated, the CW’s Riverdale will join its other comics-alum in running a musical episode, and Game of Thrones actress Hannah Waddingham (Septa Unella) is set to join Syfy’s Krypton as rebel scientist Jax-Ur.
– A new trailer also dropped for the movie adaptation of I Kill Giants, which is based on the popular 2008 graphic novel from Joe Kelly and J.M. Ken Nimura. I Kill Giants will open in theaters and digitally on March 23, having already premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to some acclaim.
