– Dark Horse has announced the latest installment in their ‘Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins’ series, with this book centering on Mollymauk Tealeaf. The graphic novel, which releases September 14, will be written by Jody Houser, Matt Mercer and Taliesin Jaffe with art by Hunter Severn Bonyun, colors by Cathy Le, lettering from Ariana Maher. This is the first title announced since the release of The Legend of Vox Machina and the beginning of Critical Role’s third campaign. With the release of “Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins – Mollymauk Tealeaf,” half the members of the Mighty Nein will have had solo comics, following the origin stories of Nott, Fjord, Yasha, Caleb and Jester.

– Marvel have announced its latest collaboration with Scholastic and the sequel to “Miles Morales: Shock waves,” “Miles Morales: Stranger Tides.” The original graphic novel, written by Justin A. Reynolds with art by Pablo Leon, pits Spider-Man against The Stranger at a video game launch, and eventually takes Miles to space and entirely outside his comfort zone. “In the first book ‘Shock Waves,’ Miles is just learning what it means to be a super hero and a teenager — how hard it is to exist in this duality — and he’s just beginning to build his confidence,” said Reynolds. “In ‘Stranger Tides,’ he’s a few months older now and has really started to grow within his role as Spider-Man. So now you see him as more self-assured, except with that budding confidence, Miles is charged with even greater responsibility to keep the world safe.” “Miles Morales: Stranger Tides” releases October 4 with a cover by Leon.

– ComiXology has officially announced its latest update, entirely building it into the Amazon storefront, removing any DRM-free downloads, while speeding up download speeds and improving search features. This follows regional updates that increased the crossover between comiXology, Amazon and its Kindle platform, but will be the first international move into integrating the previously independent comics site fully into the Amazon storefront. DRM-free comics are freely accessible files independent from a site or server; the ban on these under the new update raises controversy due to how it restricts users’ access to the comic they’ve purchased, and the necessity for online access or offline access regulated through a distributor.

– DC Comics have revealed nine variant covers releasing this March across their “Batman” catalogue of titles, highlighting the characters and style of Matt Reeves’s The Batman ahead of its release. The covers, split across four weeks, are made by Lee Bermejo (“Batman” #121), Jenny Frison (“Catwoman” #41), Rafael Albuquerque (“Batman: The Knight” #3), Carlos D’Anda (“Batman: Killing Time” #1), Jonboy Meyers (“Batgirls” #4), Puppeteer Lee (“Detective Comics” #1056), Riccardo Federici (“Nightwing” #90), Ben Oliver (“Justice League” #74) and Simone Bianchi (“Harley Quinn” #13). The Batman releases March 4 and is inspired by the visual aesthetic of Batman artists David Mazzuchelli, Tim Sale and Darwyn Cooke, as well as the cinematography of classics like The French Connection and Taxi Driver.

– Comic publisher Action Lab is facing a class action suit from 39 of its creators, with CEO and publisher Bryan Seaton directly under criticism. The case states that the publisher failed to print, publish and properly advertise creators’ work, and didn’t provide the adequate financial updates, news on production delays, or retailer advertising, all of which was contractually promised and has since resulted in a loss of royalties for those involved. This follows a string of unclear and purposely obscured changes in leadership, following the most recent restructuring of the company. The suit requests that the court releases creators from their contracts and award monetary damages.

– The Danish government has sparked controversy for its threat to deport cartoonist Abdelali Achahbi (known as Crabman) to Morocco, following a series of cartoons and animated features he produced while living in Denmark that criticized the Moroccan government, who subsequently labeled him as a traitor. Denmark has previously been known for a stalwart commitment to freedom of speech, even to the point of allowing incredibly controversial and Islamophobic material to remain in circulation due to their incilinations against censure. However, by not upholding this for Achahbi, the Danish government has been questioned on the different rules it handles non-white artists with. He has also been refused asylum by the refugee council based on application problems that have since been proven to be the fault of Herning police. The case is currently still under arbitration.

Gotham Knights has officially been picked up for a pilot at the CW, alongside The Winchesters and Walker: Independence, which are respectively spin-offs for Supernatural and Walker. Natalie Abrams, James Stoteraux, and Chad Fiveash’s Gotham Knights follows the ramifications of Bruce Wayne’s murder and the second generation of Gotham’s costumed cohort. The pilot will be directed and executive produced by Danny Cannon.

– The Adult Swim animated series The Boondocks, based on the comic strip by Aaron McGruder, has reportedly had its revival at Sony cancelled, with little likelihood of the series moving forward. The news comes from Cedric Yarbrough, the voice actor behind Tom Dubois and more. “I hate to say this, but the show is, right now, not coming back,” said Yarbrough. “I don’t know if this is breaking news, but we’ve been wanting to do the show. And Sony… they decided they’re going to pull the plug. So, I don’t know. Hopefully, maybe one day we’ll be able to revisit. If we don’t then that’s what that is. But, I wish the show was coming back.” The Boondocks stars Regina King as Huey and Riley, two kids in the town of Woodcrest satirizing American values, politics and culture. There have been many attempted revivals in the past, including a failed live-action Uncle Ruckus movie.

– Sony will reportedly be casting Dakota Johnson as the titular star of their upcoming Madame Web movie, directed by S.J. Clarkson, which will introduce the precognitive superhero to the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters. Johnson will star as the first female superhero to receive their own movie at Sony, after failed attempts to greenlight Black Cat and Silver Sable movies. There is also the rumored Spider-Woman movie from Olivia Wilde, a Spider-Women spin-off of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in the works featuring Spider-Gwen, Silk and Spider-Woman, and the Silk TV series in pre-production for Amazon Prime.

– Finally, Netflix has released a preview for its 2022 film slate, giving viewers a first look at Slumberland, the new adventure/comedy adaptation of Winsor McCay’s “Little Nemo in Slumberland.” The film stars Winsor Barkley as Nema, a young girl traversing Slumberland, and Jason Momoa as the horned outlaw Flip. The snippets of footage highlight Momoa’s transformation in the film directed by Francis Lawrence. The catalogue of other films for this year included The Gray Man, Knives Out 2, The School for Good and Evil, Pinnochio, The Adam Project, Enola Holmes 2, and more. A total 28 films were highlighted and confirmed for a 2022 release.
