In case you missed it, Marvel announced Kurt Busiek and Yildiray Cinar’s “The Marvels,” and we interviewed Matt Kindt on both his new series “Bang!” and his newly announced Bad Idea comic “ENIAC.” We also have an exclusive look at Jack T. Cole’s art process for tomorrow’s “Tartarus” #1.

Art by Jack Black

– Jack Black and Kyle Gass, the visionary comedians/musicians behind the band Tenacious D have announced their new graphic novel “Post-Apocalypto.” The novel shares its title with an album and a YouTube series by Tenacious D, the latter of which featured hand-drawn illustrations by Jack Black himself. The 180-page novel will similarly be hand-drawn by Black and co-written by him and Gass. The US$29.99 hardcover will release this September under Fantagraphics Books. “Fantagraphics has been the shining beacon of creativity in comic books for decades,” said Tenacious D. “We are thrilled to release our magnum opus with the undisputed greatest and best comic book publisher in the world. Fantagraphics 4 life.”

– Marvel announced a new “Squadron Supreme” miniseries to tie into their next event, ‘Empyre.’ The series will be written by Mark Waid (“Kingdom Come,” “Doctor Strange”) and pencilled by Dio Neves (“Deathstroke,” “Marvel Comics Presents”) with cover art by Paco Medina (“Fantastic Four,” “U.S.Avengers”). “The Squadron Supreme of America finds itself dead-center in battleground Washington, D.C., caught between two invading forces,” said Waid. “It’s a blast to write.” The Squadron Supreme were recently reintroduced in Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness’s “Avengers” run as mind-controlled heroes under the thumb of a demonically resurrected Phil Coulson. For more details on “Empyre: Squadron Supreme,” look to Marvel’s May solicitations.

– Marvel continued its streak of Empyre tie-in announcements with “Empyre: Thor” by writer Ram V (“Justice League Dark,” “These Savage Shores”) and artist Pasqual Ferry (“Thor,” “Adam Strange: Planet Heist”). “I jumped at the chance to write Thor’s tie-in to the ‘Empyre’ event,” said Ram V. “He’s one of those characters that’s the perfect mix of all the things I enjoy. I get to blur sci-fi and fantasy genres. I get to play with world mythologies and I’ll be taking Thor to unexpected places, facing off against exciting new threats. All of that with glorious art from Pasqual Ferry whose work has been nothing short of iconic!” The series pits Thor against the Kree/Skrull empire to try and save the life of his birth mother Gaea. The three-part series releases in May 2020.

– The upcoming graphic novel adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five has unveiled its cover art by Albert Monteys and Scott Newman. The novel will be adapted by Ryan North (“The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl,” “Dinosaur Comics”) and cartoonist Albert Monteys (“El Jueves,” “Universe!”) with colors by Richard Zaplana (Hay una Vaca en la Nevera, Adéu Capità!). The BOOM! graphic novel releases in comic shops on September 9th, and in bookstores on September 15th.

– The 1905 comic strip “Little Nemo in Slumberland” is getting a video game adaptation by indie developers Pie for Breakfast Studios and PxlPlz. Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends will be a non-linear platformer telling the story of a 7-year old boy navigating through his dreams and nightmares in an unconscious world. The single-player game puts players in command of Nemo and three companions, the princess of Slumberland, the clown Flip and the guard Peony, who fight back the forces of the Nightmare Fiends. Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends is currently in early development with a loose 2021 release date.

Thor: Love and Thunder has had a new addition to its writing staff in the form of screenwriter Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Someone Great, Sweet/Vicious). She will be co-writing the film with director Taika Waititi, who won an Academy Award this week for Best Adapted Screenplay with his film Jojo Rabbit. The film will feature Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster/Thor, and Christian Bale in an unknown role. The film is set to release November 5, 2021.

– Robert Kirkman and AMC went to court yesterday over a profit dispute two-and-a-half years in the making. The disagreement stems from a difference in interpretation of the agreement between Kirkman and The Walking Dead’s production team. The contract was originally written in 2009 and the case was first filed by Kirkman in August 2017. The lawsuit could potentially have a multimillion dollar outcome.

– Finally, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is getting retitled to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey to try and boost box office revenue. The film had a domestic opening of US$33.2 million on a budget of $75 million, underperforming by an expected $17 million. The film has received generally positive critical reception and high viewer satisfaction but has seemingly been hindered by its R-rating, preventing a younger audience from seeing the film. James Dowling is probably the last person on Earth who enjoyed the film Real Steel. He has other weird opinions about Hellboy, CHVRCHES, Squirrel Girl and the disappearance of Harold Holt. Follow him @James_Dow1ing on Twitter if you want to argue about Hugh Jackman's best film to date.
