– Via The Beat, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers announced Niki Smith (“The Deep and Dark Blue”)’s latest graphic novel, “The Golden Hour.” Due out in October, the book follows Manuel Soto, a survivor of gun violence, who finds solace in photography. When Manuel is assigned a group project, he befriends the farm boy Sebastian, and “learns to open up, confronts his deepest fears, and even finds first love.”

– Also via The Beat, Dark Horse announced “Immortals Fenyx Rising: From Great Beginnings,” a graphic novel based on the Ubisoft game of the same name, written by Ben Kahn with art by Georgeo Brooks. The 64-page book will see the demigod protagonist Fenyx return to her hometown after a series of strange earthquakes, and reunite with her father (who was unaware of her mother’s true nature.) “Immortals Fenyx Rising: From Great Beginnings” will be released in comics shops on September 22, 2021, and in bookstores on October 5.

– Via Major Spoilers, Oni Press announced “Rick and Morty: Rick’s New Hat!” #1, “a faux-crossover event” that will see Rick and Morty “buy the greatest hat in all the multiverse, [which] attracts an evil so banal that even our intrepid adventurers may not be able to stop it. In true comics-event tradition, this one features everyone from Rick and Morty to Mr. Poopybutthole, Pickle Rick, and MORE.” The comic, written by Alex Firer with art by Fred C. Stresing, goes on sale June 2, 2021.

– In an interview with Screen Rant, writer Scott Snyder teased several upcoming titles from his new Image imprint, Best Jackett Press, including “Chain” with Ariela Kristantina, and collaborations with Francis Manapul, Francesco Francavilla, Tula Lotay, Greg Capullo, and Jock. He said all of the books will be announced at an expo in May or June. “Nocterra” #1, the first of Snyder’s new series at Image, will be released next week on March 3.

– Anime News Network reports “Fist of the Northern Star” writer Buronson will launch a new manga with artist Nozaki Hanaichi in the May 17 issue of Big Comic Zōkan magazine. The hard-boiled manga, titled “Too Beat,” will follow two male private investigators working in Tokyo’s entertainment/red-light district Kabukicho.

– Broken Frontier reports British publisher SelfMadeHero have launched the Graphic Anthology Programme (GAP), designed to find, train, and promote comic book artists from Black, Asian, Arabic, mixed race, Romani/Traveller and non-white Latinx backgrounds. The project will lead to the participants’ work being published in an anthology this October.

– DC announced they are expanding their deal with Spotify, with plans for new series starring Superman, Lois Lane, Wonder Woman, the Joker, Catwoman, Katana, Riddler, Batgirl, and Harley Quinn. Batman Unburied, the first Spotify/DC series, created by David S. Goyer, will be released on the streaming platform sometime later this year.

– AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead was awarded a Seal of Authentic Representation from the Ruderman Family Foundation, a disability rights group based in Boston. The show received the award for casting Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, a wheelchair user, as the paraplegic character Wendell. Other shows honored by the foundation this year included the Will & Grace revival, Sex Education, Emmerdale, and Call the Midwife.

– Finally, actor Jim Carrey announced he was retiring from cartooning. Carrey, who took up the hobby to protest against the Trump administration on social media, said, “For the past 4 yrs, among other commitments, I put considerable effort into this collection of political protest cartoons. It truly feels as though you and I have crossed an ocean of outrage together… but something tells me it’s time to rest my social media gavel and reclaim a little neurological bandwidth.” His final cartoon, posted to accompany the statement, recreates his character’s exit from the ending of The Truman Show.
