– Mad Cave Studios has revealed more details on their upcoming series “Bountiful Garden,” which is making its debut on Free Comic Book Day. The series, written by Ivy Noelle Weir with art by Kelly Williams, follows a team of teenage scientists sent to terraform a distant planet. When their cyrostasis malfunctions, they awake ten years early above an unknown planet, only to discover the cosmic horror behind their awakening. Veteran artist Andrea Mutti will provide the cover art for the book. “Bountiful Garden” #1 can be preordered starting June 30, and releases in stores on September 8. The prelude will be released on Free Comic Book Day (August 14) at participating shops.

– Black Mask Studios unveiled “Everfrost,” a post-apocalyptic sci-fi series by writer Ryan K. Lindsay (“Eternal”), and artist Sami Kivelä (“Abbott”). The four-issue series tells the story of Van Louise, a retired warrior scientist seeking a way off her collapsing planet, “but her plans are about to get chewed up by a mounting war between the Warlords – violent gatekeepers for the global ruling party – and the Bloom – those who risk extinction living out on the water – as well as a family reunion with her son who she hasn’t seen since he died in her arms when he was a child.” The first issue will be released in June.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World will return to Dolby Cinemas on April 30 of this year, celebrating the film’s (belated) 10th anniversary. According to the film’s director, Edgar Wright, the re-release will be “reimagined” for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. A new 4K is also on the way, according to Wright’s Twitter, but no release date has been announced. “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was designed for the big screen and for the best sound systems,” Wright said of the re-release. “To be able to see it with the best specs is obviously any filmmaker’s dream.”

– Funko unveiled a Pop figurine of MAD Magazine mascot Alfred E. Neuman. The figurine is the second Funko has produced of the pop culture icon, the first being a 2012 Wacky Wobbler bobblehead. Two models of the Funko Pop have been produced: the standard, and a special Chase version sticking his tongue out. The Chase version will be sent at random to those who pre-order. The Alfred E. Neuman Pop is available for pre-order at Walmart and Entertainment Earth.

– Cary Fukunaga (No Time to Die) has been tapped to direct a live-action adaptation of the Image series “Tokyo Ghost.” The series, created by writer Rick Remender (“Uncanny X-Force”) and artist Sean Gordon Murphy (“Batman: White Knight”), follows two peacekeepers in the 2089 garden nation of Tokyo. Remender will handle script duties for the adaptation.

– Ron Livingston (Office Space) will replace Billy Crudup as Henry Allen, father of Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen, in the upcoming Flash movie. Crudup appeared as the Scarlet Speedster’s father in 2017’s Justice League, although he was not credited until 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson and YouTube comedian/singer Rudy Mancuso have also joined the cast in unspecified roles. The Flash, which will also star Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Sasha Calle as Supergirl, and both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton as Batman (by way of alternate universe), is slated to hit theaters on November 4, 2022.

– In other DC film news, former James Bond Pierce Brosnan has been cast as Dr. Fate in the upcoming Black Adam film. Brosnan will portray Kent Nelson, joining the cinematic Justice Society of America alongside Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman, Noah Centineo’s Atom Smasher, and Quintessa Swindell’s Cyclone. The film stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who portrays the title anti-hero and nemesis to Shazam.

– US Justice Department attorneys are continuing to review Sony’s attempted buyout of anime streaming service Crunchyroll over potential antitrust concerns. The extended review may last up to six months, if not longer. If the deal is not approved, the Justice Department can sue to block it, potentially killing the US$1.175 billion deal in the process. Sony (with Aniplex) already owns a majority stake in American anime distributor Funimation, consolidating it with French company Wakanim and the Australian Madman Anime Group in 2019. It also owns anime production companies A-1 Pictures and CloverWorks. This led to concerns over the number of available outlets for Japanese media in the US, prompting the Justice Department review.

– Finally, the black-and-white version of Zack Snyder’s Justice League cut, dubbed the Justice is Gray edition, is now streaming on HBO Max. You can read our review of the desaturated color version here.
