– Academy Award nominee Flee is set to be adapted into a graphic novel. Jonas Poher Rasmussen, director of the animated documentary, will pen the upcoming YA release from Scholastic. No release date has been set. A Danish film, Flee tells the story of the pseudonymous Amin Nawabi, who fled to Europe from Afghanistan with his family as a child. It was the first movie to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary, Best Animated Film, and Best International Feature Film.
– Last year’s Best Animated Short winner If Anything Happens I Love You will also be adapted into graphic novel form at Andrews McMeel Publishing. The film, available on Netflix, depicts two grieving parents as they process the death of their daughter, who was killed in a school shooting. It will be adapted by directors Will McCormack and Michael Govier with artist Youngran Nho, who served as animation director on the film, and include a foreword by executive producer Laura Dern. The book is due out this September.
– Lucie Bryon’s shōjo manga-inspired “Voleuse” is getting an English translation from Nobrow Press. The French graphic novel, retitled “Thieves” for this new release, tells the story of a girl with a penchant for kleptomania, who wakes up in a stranger’s mansion, surrounded by a pile of stolen objects. She and the girl she has a crush on must then retrace their steps from the previous night. The book is due out on October 4, 2022.
– Alex de Campi, Skylar Patridge and Kelly Fitzpatrick have launched a new series, “Reversal,” on Webtoon. The story follows sixth grader Tré Grant, who discovers a potential curse-breaking artifact in a world where magic has suddenly reemerged. The series was originally written for print, and according to De Campi, has a publisher for a physical release. She calls adapting it to the new media “a fascinating design exercise.” The first episode of “Reversal” can be here, with new episodes going up every two weeks.
– The artist behind “Lonely Receiver,” “Test,” “Moth & Whisper,” and more, has announced their name is now Rye Hickman. Hickman made the announcement back in February, updating their website and social media to reflect the change. They did not explain the reason for change, though it is likely they chose the gender neutral name to better reflect their non-binary status.
– Finally, Marvel have not only announced that the Spider-Smasher will debut in “Miles Morales: Spider-Man” #38, but they’ve also revealed their true identity (spoiler alert for the link). The book, written by Saladin Ahmed with art from Christopher Allen, will see Miles arrive in a timeline where evil clone Selim rules over the Empire of the Spider, and Spider-Smasher leads the rebellion. “Miles Morales: Spider-Man” #38 hits shelves on May 4 with cover art by Taurin Clarke. Variant covers will be available from Allen, Sergio Davila, Skan, Jen Bartel, and Ernanda Souza.
