– Kicking off, the CW Network has given early renewal status to the bulk of its comic book related shows already for the 2018-19 television season. Those included in the networks early renewal are The Flash (Season 5), Arrow (season 7), Legends of Tomorrow (season 4), Supergirl (season 4), Black Lightning (season 2), and Riverdale (season 3). The only comic book-related show the network did not renew early was iZombie, but we will know its status next month.
– IDW Group Editor, Sarah Gaydos, is making the jump to Oni Press for the newly minted role of Editorial Director of Licensed Publishing. Gaydos broke into mainstream comics in 2006 as an assistant at WildStorm before becoming an Editor at DC and moving to IDW in 2013.
– Multiple mainstream media outlets have reported on the the current targeted harassment campaign in the comic book industry, dubbed Comicsgate, recently including BuzzFeed and The Daily Telegraph. Yesterday, The Daily Beast took their turn, and highlighted the profitable nature of Comicsgate for that of the abusers. You are encouraged to read that entire article here, and to be conscious of online harassment and how it continues to perpetuate our industry.
– Marvel has announced that “Captain America” is getting several guests artists for the final four issues of Mark Waid’s run on the title, which takes place far in the future and follows Steve Rogers’s grandson. Series artist Chris Samnee is leaving the title after #700, and Leonardo Romero was announced to replace him to finish the run, but a group including Adam Hughes, J.G. Jones, Howard Chaykin, and Chris Sprouse have joined for #701 and #702 with more to be announced for the next two issues.
– Gary Whitta teased on Twitter that his and Darick Robertson’s creator-owned comic “Oliver” will finally be out next year from Image Comics. The series is a take on Oliver Twist, but with a post-apocalyptic (ahem) twist. The comic series has been over ten years in the making.
– Over the weekend the National Cartoonists Society announced its nominees for the 72nd annual Reuben Awards, which take place May 26th in Philadelphia. The nominees are all previous finalists and include Glen Keane, Lynda Barry, Stephan Pastis, Hilary B. Price, and Mark Tatulli.
– Finally, an app called “Webcomic Name Mashup” has been created to mash together previous panels from the popular webcomic “Webcomic Name” in hilarious fashion. The Alex Norris created series is an ongoing gag comic filled with self-deprecating humor. You can find more here.
