In case you missed it, British publisher Rebellion is releasing a “The Vigilant” one-shot, and American Mythology is launching a supernatural Zorro series. We also interviewed Wendy and Richard Pini about the end of “ElfQuest,” and Ryan Browne on bringing “God Hates Astronauts” to Kickstarter.

– Warner Bros. announced that Steven Spielberg is entering the DC Universe with Blackhawk, an adaptation of the classic DC series about WWII-era pilots. Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment is producing the film in partnership with Warner Bros., and Spielberg hopes to direct. Frequent Spielberg collaborator David Koepp (Jurassic Park) has been tapped to write the screenplay. “It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring Ready Player One to the screen.  They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre.  I am excited to reunite with them on Blackhawk,” Spielberg said of the announcement.

– In further DC Films news, Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) has been chosen to direct an untitled “girl gang” movie, most likely featuring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and introducing Batgirl to the universe. Once the deal is complete, Yan will become the first female Asian director to helm a superhero film.

– Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson’s horror series “Beasts of Burden” will return in a four-issue series this summer, titled “Beasts of Burden: Wise Dogs and Eldritch Men.” Dorkin will collaborate with artist Benjamin Dewey (“The Autumnlands”) on the new comic, which sees the Wise Dogs discover a mountain village inhabited by a survivalist witch-cult, who are using a “Blood Lure” to attract occult forces causing disturbances at their home of Burden Hill. The first issue goes on sale August 22.

– Jake Halpern and Michael Sloan’s “Welcome to the New World,” the recipient of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning, is sparking a lot of discussion in the cartooning community after its win. It is the first digital-first comic to win, it’s the first award to two creators in the category, and it also is shining a light on The New York Times not employing a full-time editorial cartoonist (Halpern and Sloan are freelancers).

– EuroComics will be bringing “The Quest of Ewilan” series to English audiences ahead of its feature film adaptation. The series is adapted from Pierre Bottero’s novels that follow a 13-year-old girl as she passes through a portal to an epic fantasy world. ‘The Quest of Ewilan, Vol. 1: From One World to Another’ is written by Lylian and illustrated by Laurence Baldetti, and will be released in September.

– Titan Books is going to publish two tie-in books for the upcoming Spider-Man game from Insomniac Games. The first, Spider-Man: Hostile Takeover, is a prequel to the events of the game by author David Liss. The second tie-in is Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Art of the Game, written by Paul Davies. Spider-Man: Hostile Takeover releases on August 21, with Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Art of the Game following on September 11. The game itself comes to PlayStation 4 exclusively on September 7.

– Arrow will go through a leadership change before its upcoming seventh season. Co-executive producer Beth Schwartz will be promoted to executive producer and sole showrunner. Current executive producer and co-showrunner Wendy Mericle is departing after this season. Lastly, original co-showrunner Marc Guggenheim will be stepping back into an executive consultant role for the show, as well as on Legends of Tomorrow.

– The first issue of the post-“re-jiggering” “MAD Magazine” came out yesterday. Along with the relaunch, which features a host of new contributors, the magazine is also getting a Twitch channel debuting on April 20, a bi-monthly podcast later this summer, and an updated MAD blog.

– “Fairy Tail” mangaka Hiro Mashima has been added to the panel of judges who will choose an artist to draw a licensed Marvel serial in Kodansha’s “Weekly Shonen.” Mashima joins previously announced judges, Marvel CCO Joe Quesada and Marvel Editor-In-Chief C.B. Cebulski. In addition to drawing the Marvel manga, the winner will also receive 3 million Yen (about $24,490 U.S. Dollars).

– Valiant Entertainment has announced that Managing Editor Robert Meyers has been promoted to Editorial Director. Meyers has been with Valiant since 2013, when he joined as Operations Coordinator, before being named Managing Editor in 2016. The move is the latest in a number of administrative shifts at the company following the buyout by Chinese company DMG.

– Indian cartoonist Swati Vadlamudi has had a FIR (a police report against someone suspected of committing a crime) filed against her after one of her satirical cartoons highlighting the rape epidemic in the country went viral on Facebook. The FIR was filed under Section 295 (a), which is “deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.” Several organizations have released statements of support for Vadlamudi.
