– BOOM! Studios unveiled “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 30th Anniversary Comic Special.” The anthology will feature five stories set in the Power Rangers universe, written by Ryan Parrott, Mat Groom, original Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson with Matt Hotson, Maria Ingrande Mora, and Melissa Flores, with art from Hendry Prasetya, Eleonora Carlini, Marco Renna, and Jo Mi-Gyeong. “Between a spotlight on Ernie in Angel Grove,” BOOM! Studios says, “Alpha 5’s struggle to find his true purpose, a mind-bending ‘What If?’ story about Tommy’s powers which introduces an all-new alternate universe, an additional tale about his marriage to Kat, and a deeper look at the Ranger Academy, this anniversary issue is truly packed full of content worthy of the 30-year legacy.” It’s due out on August 30, 2023.

– In more BOOM! Studios news, writer Casey Gilly and artist Oriol Roig will continue the legacy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. “Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer,” the new series picking up after March’s “Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer Special,” follows a grown up Thess, who is now the Slayer, when a mysterious clan uses her friends as bait. Issue #1 is due out August 2023. Gilly also wrote the first volume of “Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer,” released in early 2022.

– Fresh off an Eisner nomination for Best Humor Publication, ”Killer Queens” will return with a new volume. Dark Horse’s “Killer Queens 2: Kings, Not Wings” will run for four issues, and see Alex and Max on the trail of a runaway heir, after running into their old boss at Space Pride. David M. Booher returns to write, with Bradley Clayton taking over interior art. Colorist Harry Saxon and letterer Lucas Gattoni return as well. Issue #1 hits shelves on August 9.

– Dark Horse also announced “Beyond Mortal,” from writer Cullen Bunn and artist Danny Luckert. The graphic novel will see superheroes and villains alike face primordial Lovecraftian elder gods attempting to reclaim Earth. The OGN will be available in book stores on January 30, 2024, and comics shops the following day.

– Eisner-winning writer Kelly Thompson and artist Mattia De Iulis have announced their first creator-owned project, “The Cull.” Described as “Something is Killing the Children” meets The Goonies, the project was originally intended for Substack, but will be released by Image instead. Issue #1 (of 5) will be available in comics shops on August 16.

– “Venom” artist Ryan Stegman is teaming up with “Superboy” writer Kenny Porter for a story about a failing dentist, who finds himself body-swapped with the world’s greatest superhero. “The Schlub” will be drawn by Tyrell Cannon, with Mike Spicer on board for colors, and lettering by John J. Hill. It will be available in shops starting August 23.

– Netflix released the trailer for its upcoming animated feature Nimona. Based on the comic by ND Stevenson, Nimona follows the titular shapeshifter (Chloë Grace Moretz), who joins forces with the one-armed ex-knight Ballister Blackheart (Riz Ahmed) to battle the Institution. The film was first optioned by 20th Century Fox in 2015, before Disney acquired Fox in 2019. The project was shelved with the closure of animation producer Blue Sky Studios in 2021, until Annapurna Pictures picked up the project last year. The film debuts on Netflix on June 30.

– Netflix also tweeted that The Chosen One, the new series based on Mark Millar and Peter Gross’s “American Jesus,” will be released on August 16. The English/Spanish series, set in Mexico, stars Bobby Luhnow as a 12-year old boy who learns he possesses supernatural, seemingly divine powers. It also stars Dianna Agron and Tenoch Huerta.

– Brianna Hildebrand and Shioli Kutsuna are set to set to return as Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio in Deadpool 3. The pair return alongside Karan Soni (Dopinder), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Rob Delaney (Peter), and Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson/Deadpool). Reynolds will also script alongside Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese, Zeb Wells, and director Shawn Levy. The film is due out November 8, 2024.

Futurama is set to return for a new season on July 24, exclusively on Hulu. A trailer released by the streamer gives us our first peak at the new season, along with characters set to return, including Robot Santa, Nibbler, Zapp Brannigan, Calculon, and Mom.

– Meanwhile, Disney are set to pull content from both Disney+ and Hulu on May 26. Titles set to leave the streamers include Y: The Last Man and Just Beyond, plus the Willow series, Big Shot, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Diary of a Future President, The Mysterious Benedict Society, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, Dollface, Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, and Little Demon. Three Marvel documentaries are also set to disappear: Marvel Project Hero, Marvel’s MPower, and Marvel Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever. The move has been seen as a cost cutting measure, with CFO Christine McCarthy saying the company was reviewing potential and strategic changes to content creation.

– Finally, Marvel released their August solicitations, which include the upcoming ‘Contest of Chaos’ tie-ins, consisting of annuals for “Spider-Man,” “Iron Man,” “Fantastic Four,” and “Moon Knight.” Other reveals included “Marvel’s Voices: X-Men” #1, by Greg Pak, Al Ewing, Jay Edidin, Jan Bazaldua, Jethro Morales, Nina Vakueva, and more. Two new miniseries were confirmed as well: Kyle Starks and Jesus Hervás will send the pets of the Marvel Universe (Throg, Redwing, Chewie, Lucky, and more) to rescue Lockjaw from Kraven the Hunter in the four-part “Marvel Unleashed,” while Miles Morales will find himself at the center of an multiversal math bowl in the three-part “Strange Academy: Miles Morales,” by Carlos Hernandez and Juann Cabal.
