– After the success of it’s series of hip-hop variants, Marvel will switch genres and do rock music variants this Fall. So far, they have announced five variants: Mike Hawthorne and Nathan Fairbairn doing Nirvana’s Nevermind for “Guardians of the Galaxy” #9, Damion Scott doing Guns N’ Roses Appetite for Destruction for “Inhumans: Once and Future Kings” #2, Marco Rudy doing The Clash’s London Calling for “Mighty Thor” #23, Daniel Acuna doing Blondie’s Parallel Lines for “X-Men Blue” #11. Mike Del Mundo doing a cover for “X-Men Gold” #11, but the theme has not been revealed.

– The premiere date for Star Trek: Discovery has been revealed to be September 24. The announcement came from the show’s official Twitter account. The first episode will debut on CBS, before moving to the stand-alone streaming app, CBS All Access. The second episode will be available immediately after the premiere concludes. The show was supposed to debut at the beginning of the year, but got delayed twice due to script, visual effects, and casting issues.

– The 2017 Inkwell Award winners have been announced, which recognizes “excellence in the art form of comic book inking.” Scott Hanna, Walden Wong, Jonathon Glapion, and Erik Larsen all took home awards. Violet Barclay aka Valerie Smith and Allen Milgrom received the Special Recognition Award, and Jerry Ordway and Rudy Nebres were inducted into the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame.

– DC is bringing comics back to newsstands in the form of “Showcase” anthologies. Showcase Magazine reprints five regular comic issues and sells for $9.98. The first entry in the format was spotted in Walmart and has “Batman Rebirth” #1, “Wonder Woman” #1, “Batman and Robin” #30, “Justice League” #1, and “Batman” #13. That seems like an incredibly random selection of stories, but hopefully it can bring in some new readers.

– The latest DC Universe Original Movie will again premiere at San Diego Comic-Con. Batman and Harley Quinn will be shown on Friday, July 21, followed by a post-screening panel with members of the core cast and crew (which members were not specified). The film features a return to the classic DC Animated Universe animation style, along with Kevin Conroy and Loren Lester reprising their roles as Batman and Nightwing, and Big Bang Theory star Melissa Rauch joining as Harley Quinn.

– John Barrowman announced a new comic series for Legendary Comics, called “Cursed.” The series will “bring folklore, legend, and modern day anti-heroics together.” Barrowman is writing the project with his sister and creative partner Carole Barrowman, along with Erika Lewis. An art team or release date has not been announced yet.

– Garfield and Grumpy Cat will share a new mini-series, because of course they will. Dynamite and BOOM! are teaming up for the three-issue series from writer Mark Evanier and artist Steve Uy. It sounds like they will be stand-alone stories because the press release mentions that one of them was “inspired and approved” by Garfield creator Jim Davis.

– Marvel’s First Family has been largely MIA since Hickman’s ‘Secret Wars.’ Individual members have shown up as supporting characters, but there has been nothing featuring all of them for a while. It looks like that may change soon, with Marvel sending out a teaser of something called Fantastic Three to retailers after Heroescon.

– Chapterhouse Comics is relaunching “Captain Canuck” with writer Kalman Andrasofszky and artists Leonard Kirk, Emmanuelle Chateauneuf, and Yinfaowei Harrison. The series picks up the pieces from the last volume, where Captain Canuck has walked away from the mantle after his brother and partner became a murderer.
