– DC has unveiled a new middle-grade graphic novel for young fans of Star City’s Emerald Archer. “Green Arrow: Stranded” will follow 13-year old Oliver Queen as he struggles to survive and protect his injured father after a plane crash strands them on a deserted island. This new take on Queen’s origin will be written by The Ninth Circle author Brendan Deneen in his first work for DC, and illustrated by debuting artist Bell Hosalla. The OGN will be the first release from DC’s Books for Young Readers line in 2022, and is due to hit shelves March 1.

– With COVID-19 cases on the rise in Japan, the Tokyo Olympics’ decision to use popular anime and manga characters has angered some fans. Many are calling the upcoming summer games “dirty,” and the use of pop culture icons such as Astro Boy and Sailor Moon disrespectful to both the characters and the original creators. Rumiko Tezuka, Tezuka Productions board member and daughter of “Astro Boy” creator Osamu Tezuka, stated on Twitter that the agreement to use the character was decided well before COVID was an issue.

– International publishing house gestalten will explore the “unique graphic language” of Marvel Comics, and its impact on pop culture through the decades, with their upcoming release Marvel by Design. The book will examine art from the publisher’s 80+ year history, ranging from interior art, to logos and layouts, and how the famed “Marvel Method” itself reshaped graphic storytelling. The book will be available this September in the EU, and November for the US. It is available for preorder today.

– Kevin Feige confirmed rumors that the creature seen in the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings trailer is in fact the Abomination, and that his opponent is Doctor Strange’s sidekick Wong (Benedict Wong). Tim Roth’s Incredible Hulk antagonist was already confirmed to be a major part of Disney+’s upcoming She-Hulk series, but fan speculation began circulating when the trailer hit the Internet last week. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will release in theaters on September 3, 2021.

– ZQ Entertainment has acquired the rights to “Black Cotton Star,” with Reginald Hudlin attached to direct the adaptation. Deric Hughes and Benjamin Raab, best known for their work on Syfy’s Warehouse 13 and multiple CW series, will handle screenwriting duties for the WWII era epic. Series creators Yves Sente and Steve Cuzor are onboard to produce.

– According to Publishers Weekly’s rights report for June 28, 2021, Scholastic has acquired an as-of-yet untitled graphic novel from Studio Mucci founder Amina Mucciolo. The middle grade OGN is a semi-autobiographical story of how Mucciolo began braiding her hair with bright colors, and the struggles it helped her cope with. It is due out in Summer 2023. Also in 2023, First Second will release “Continental Drifter,” Kathy Macleod’s memoirs about growing up Thai-American in both Bangkok and the US; and Fall 2023 will see FSG release the basketball coming-of-age story “Fast Break,” from writer Shawn Pryor and artist Courtney Hahn.

– Finally, Star Trek alum George Takei’s memoir “They Called Us Enemy,” is being handed out to Air Force Academy cadet as part of the school’s reading initiative. Dean of Faculty Brig. Gen. Linell Letendre shared her excitement on Instagram. In an interview with NBC10 Boston, Takei said he hoped the graphic novel would inspire young Americans to break the “the unending cycle” of cruelty and injustice gripping the nation.
