– Via ICv2, Graphic Mundi have announced two new titles in their Fall 2023 catalog. The first, “Good Girls Go to Hell,” is a graphic memoir by Tohar Sherman-Friedman that chronicles her childhood as the youngest of seven in a conservative Jewish family in the West Bank. The second title, “I Don’t Want to Be a Mom,” is by Irene Olmo, and revolves around Olmo’s thoughts on childlessness, following her realization that it may not be for her, and confronting the unspoken assumption that she would be a mother. “Good Girls Go to Hell” will go on sale November 21, 2023, while “I Don’t Want to Be a Mom” will debut on November 14.
– Also via ICv2, William Morrow will publish “Murder on the Orient Express: The Graphic Novel,” an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel of the same name. The book is adapted by artist Bob Al-Greene. Christie’s novel was released in 1934, and was based on the Lindbergh kidnapping, as well as the writer’s own travels on the Orient Express. The novel has spawned adaptations throughout all different media since it was first published. “Murder on the Orient Express: The Graphic Novel” will be released on September 12, 2023.
– Last week, Publishers Weekly announced two new graphic novel deals. First up, Versify has bought “Castles and Cholos,” a YA graphic novel written by Samuel Teer and illustrated by Alex Moore. The book follows a group of Latin American teens who like to play a TTRPG called Castles and Creatures. When one of their friends returns to the table, the group dynamic begins to shift. Publication is set for 2027.
Scholastic has won, at auction, world rights to “Braided Roots.” Written by Pasha Westbrook and illustrated by Madelyn Goodnight, “Braided Roots” is a semi-autobiographical work, in which a single father braids his daughter’s hair, and tells her stories about their Choctaw and Chickasaw Freedmen ancestors, weaving together her history through her braid. Publication for “Braided Roots” is set for Fall 2025.
– Via Down The Tubes, the inaugural winner of the Caliburn Prize, a £2500 grant for unpublished UK comic creators through Tony Lee’s Hooded Man Media imprint, has been announced. After going through a panel of judges, including creators Kieron Gillen, David Leach and Rachael Smith, as well as others, Michael Lomon was announced as the winner for his work, “Palace of Tears.” First published as a webcomic, “Palace of Tears” takes place on a ravaged Earth in the far flung future where only pockets of humanity survive. Lomon will collect his prize at this weekend’s London Film and Comic Con.
– Via Anime News Network, Warner Bros. Japan announced yesterday at Anime Expo Suicide Squad ISEKAI, a new anime series from Wit Studio. “Isekai” is a Japanese word for fiction where characters get transported to another world. Warner Bros.’s official description reads “DC’s Harley Quinn, the Joker, and The Suicide Squad rampage onto the stage of ISEKAI in the new original anime series… The most maddening worlds collide in an epic and violent fantasy with the strongest line-up of anime creators!” You can check out the trailer here.
