– The live recording of the musical Hamilton went live on Disney+ this weekend, and artist Brent Schoonover used the occasion to share a look at some sample pages for an unproduced Hamilton graphic novel. The samples include character designs of most of the musical’s main cast, which were developed without using actor likenesses, as well as comic stagings of several of the musical’s songs. Schoonover’s artwork, colored by Kelly Fitzpatrick, is viewable on his Twitter.
– Via Pedestrian.tv, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s audio program Background Briefing has produced a graphic novel that tells the story of a transgender woman who was held in a male prison. The piece, based on reporting by ABC journalist Meghna Bali and producer Gina McKeon, and featuring art by illustrator Samuel Luke, features the story of Mara Ellis, who first entered prison in 2018. The story follows her journey through months of isolation and dehumanization through a penal system that doesn’t acknowledge her correct gender, shining a light on the murky or nonexistent policies regarding gender identity in the Australian penal system. You can find the full graphic novel at ABC, as well as its accompanying Background Briefing episode.
– Comics writer Lonnie Nadler confirmed on Twitter that he is producing a new YouTube interview and live drawing show titled Drawn and Cornered. Produced by the Vancouver art studio A Filthy Lot and hosted by N.A. Razzak, the art produced in each episode will be auctioned off to benefit the charity of the artist’s choosing. The first episode, available now, features writer and artist Simon Roy (“Prophet”), with proceeds from the auction going to the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation.
– Language and criminology experts from the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University have crafted a new comic strip educational tool to help tackle sexual harassment. The experts partnered with the Nottingham-based graphic art company Dawn of the Unread, and artist Kim Thompson, to produce “Changing Minds,” a webcomic that, via their press release, “aims to deliver a strong and accessible message about the real impact of harassment on the lives of women and girls in Nottingham city, county and beyond.” The comic is the latest piece of a larger package of educational resources commissioned as part of the Nottingham Misogyny Hate Crime Report, originally published in 2018. You can find the full digital comic here.
– Via Anime News Network, the Spider-Man manga “Spider-Man: Fake Red” has been canceled. Creator Yūsuke Ōsawa stated on Twitter that while initial sales of the manga’s first compiled book volume did well, that was not the case for additional printings, and the digital version was not a success either. He added that there are currently no plans for an English translation.
– Finally, the Star-Spangled Avenger has assembled in a new world: Captain America’s outfit, complete with his indestructible shield, is now available in the Item Shop in Fortnite.
