In case you missed it, Marvel and Scholastic are expanding their partnership to include graphic novels, and comiXology have announced the latest in their Originals line will be a graphic novel called “Virtually Yours.”
– DC Comics announced two anthology specials for October. First up is “Legend of The Swamp Thing Halloween Spectacular” #1, a 48-page collection of six all-new stories featuring Tom King, James Tynion IV, Vita Ayala, Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Ram V, with art from the likes of Domo Stanton, Mike Perkins, Emma Rios and Christian Ward.
The next anthology is “DC: The Doomed and The Damned” #1, an 80-page prestige format one-shot that features writers Carmen Maria Machado, Marv Wolfman, Ken Porter, John Arcudi, Saladin Ahmed, Alyssa Wong, and Travis Moore, among others. Artists include Riley Rossmo, Mike Perkins, Leonardo Manco, Travis Moore, and Tom Mandrake. “Legend of The Swamp Thing Halloween Spectacular” #1 will be available Tuesday, October 6, 2020 for $5.99, while “DC: The Doomed and The Damned” will go on sale for $9.99 on Tuesday, October 13, 2020.
– BOOM! Studios announced that they have signed a massive deal with artist Jenny Frison, that will see the debut of twenty covers on some of BOOM!’s top comic book series through 2021. Frison’s covers from this new deal will premiere in September with “We Only Find Them When They’re Dead” #1 and “An Unkindness of Ravens” #1. In October, Frison will be featured on variant covers to “Something is Killing The Children” #11 and “Seven Secrets” #4. Then, in December, Frison will debut a variant cover on a new unannounced project. You can get a sneak peak at some of these covers here.
– Archie Comics announced an exclusive first-look deal with Spotify to adapt their characters and stories into multiple podcasts on the streaming platform. The slate of series will span the entire Archieverse of characters, including Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Sabrina, Josie & The Pussycats and many more. The creative team at Archie Comics will collaborate with Spotify Studios on the development of multiple series, with potential for all-ages content as well as podcasts aimed at older audiences.
– In a tweet, Jim Zub announced that “Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda” #8 which released Wednesday, July 8, was the final issue of the series. He also added that “Empyre: Invasion of Wakanda” will be no longer moving forward. “Empyre: Invasion of Wakanda” was a planned three-issue limited series that would have focused on the effect of the Kree/Skrull Empire invading the secret nation of Wakanda. Though he said the situation was not ideal, Zub is proud of the work he did on the series.
– Via ICv2, DC Comics have announced the 480-page “Plastic Man: Rubber Banded – The Deluxe Edition”. The book collects “Plastic Man” #1-20 by Kyle Baker and Scott Morse, and is bound and secured by an actual rubber band belly belt patterned after Plastic Man’s signature belt. The belly band is two inches in height and 0.05 inches thick, and fits neatly around the book to keep it shut. “Plastic Man: Rubber Banded – The Deluxe Edition” will cost $69.99 and will be available October 20, 2020.
– Via Deadline, Hulu’s Woke has a premiere date of September 9, 2020. All eight episodes will be available to stream. Woke is based on the life and work of artist Keith Knight, and stars Lamorne Morris as Keef, an African-American cartoonist on the verge of mainstream success. In addition to Morris, the cast includes T. Murph and Blake Anderson. Watch the trailer here, and stream Woke on Hulu September 9, 2020.
– Deadline also reports that HBO’s Watchmen nabbed four Television Critics Association Awards nominations, tying with Netflix’s Unbelievable for the most nominations. The TCA honors a wide spectrum of programing, including news and information, youth, reality, drama, comedy, miniseries and sketch/variety shows. Winners will be announced later this summer.
– And in the last bit of news of from Deadline, Quibi has given the green light to Tomie, a series based on Junji Ito’s cult hit horror manga series of the same name. Adeline Rudolph is attached to star in the title role of a missing high school girl, whose body parts are discovered scattered around a small town. Sony Pictures Television will co-produce the series with UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.
– Finally, via IGN, Sony unveiled the box art for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The game’s box art showcases Miles in his Spider-Man suit, and hints at his “venom strike,” a unique ability he possesses that Peter Park’s Spider-Man does not. It is one of the first pieces of PlayStation 5 cover art to be released, and IGN notes that the box does not include the “Only on PlayStation” branding found on PS4 exclusives.
