Here is a detailed look at the other stories you might have missed:

Black Mask Studios

Entertainment Weekly revealed Black Mask Studios’s “Calexit” will be returning to help raise funds for the San Diego Rapid Response Network, an “organization dedicated to aiding immigrants and their families in the San Diego border region.” “Calexit: All Systems San Diego,” #1, written by Matteo Pizzolo and drawn by Carlos Granda, goes on sale this week at San Diego Comic Con, and will feature all-new characters in a San Diego-set adventure. In the press release, Pizzelo explains, “‘Calexit’ is an optimistic dystopia. It’s about people living in a world gone mad who still struggle through the chaos to try to do the right thing, to try to help one another.” He continued, “These families need help, and we thought it was important to focus some of the energy at San Diego Comic-Con to support them.” For readers who aren’t attending Comic-Con, and who still want to support the cause, “Calexit: All Systems San Diego” will be available on comixology, or available to order through Black Mask Direct or your local comic shop.

– Marvel TV announced Iron Fist season 2 will be released on Netflix on September 7, and that Alice Eve will be playing classic Daredevil villain Typhoid Mary. Nickelodeon meanwhile, revealed the new Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon will begin airing on September 17, with a sneak peek of the first episode, “Mystic Mayhem,” airing today.

The Beat had press access to DC Universe. On opening the app they found a large number of comics to choose from. Fans will be able to read full series, including; “Y: The Last Man,” “American Vampire,” and “The Dark Knight Returns.” Upon closer inspection, they found looking for specific titles difficult, for example, searching for Grant Morrison would only bring up single issues he wrote, not series, moreover searching for Ann Nocenti would cause every annual to be displayed, due to the letters of her first name. The Beat stated that reading comics on the app was fun and intuitive, with reading options ranging from the standard full view, a guided reading view or even a speacial motion comic view. The app, when launched will not feature any recent DC Entertainment like the DCEU movies, or Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, but would offer a healthy mix of older movies, such as Richard Donner’s Superman films, animated movies and series like Static Shock. DC has also built in an encyclopedia chock full of information on DC characters, for a more in-depth feel.

– DC Comics have made select “Batman” #50 and “Catwoman” #1 copies fully returnable by Direct Market retailers. DC wrote this week in a newsletter to retailers: “DC stands by the amazing work of the creative teams involved on ‘Batman’ #50 and ‘Catwoman’ #1,” continuing, “DC also stands by its publication of ‘Batman’ #50 and ‘Catwoman’ #1, and we invite you to buckle up for the next 50 issues. DC is proud of its reputation as the prime supporter of the Direct Market, and its commitment to these retailers is unparalleled.” This is because the New York Times released an article containing spoilers in regards to the “Batman” #50’s plot, which caused fears that the book would be returned, or readers wouldn’t purchase the book.

– Jim Lee and Dan Didio attended a Guiness World Record announcement for “Action Comics” being named the “longest-running Comic book series,” which took place on Thursday morning at San Diego. As part of the event, DC states that “Action Comics” #1 sold-out first print run was 500,000 copies. “Action Comics” started in 1938 and was written by Jerry Siegel and drawn by Joe Shuster.

– DC’s Co-publisher Dan Didio then confirmed at DC’s Big picture panel that “Detective Comics” #1000 is planned for a March 2019 release. “Batman: Damned” was also talked about, with writer Brian Azzarello saying the series will “take Batman out of his element” and feature John Constantine and other magical characters including Zatanna and the Spectre.

– Writer Christophe Bec and artist Stefano Raffaele’s “Under,” a graphic novel about mutant creatures lurking below a major U.S metropolis, is coming to movie theaters. Franco-Belgian comics powerhouse Media Participations Group, Titan Comics and producer Born Wild will develop the project. Anthony Alleyne (Sunburn) and up-and-coming writer Brenning Hayden will adapt the comic for the big screen. In an interview with Variety, Bec and Raffaele said “‘Under’ is a story which is close to our hearts, and it was his and Brennig’s strong vision of blending the spirit of our original work with compemporary social elements that won us over.” The movie will start shooting late 2019.

– Comcast have dropped their bid for 21st Century Fox, leaving Disney the sole party in negotiations with a bid standing at $71.3 billion. Disney are set to gain franchises like X-Men, Alien, Planet of the Apes and much more.

– Jeff Lemire announced he has written the first episode of a six-part TV miniseries based on his graphic novel trilogy “Essex County.” He also revealed he is writing another 12-issue series set in the Black Hammer universe, which regular collaborator Jose Villarrubia will color. Keep a look out for more news on all of Lemire’s creator-owned work in our monthly column, Lemire County.

– Finally, Deadpool 2 star Zazie Beetz is in talks to join Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker movie, due out October 4, 2019.
