In case you missed it, San Diego Comic-Con took place during the break, and we have all the news from there at the link. Afterwards, DC unveiled their October 2023 solicitations, which include “Batman: City of Madness,” by Christian Ward, while Titan announced “Life is Strange: Forget-Me-Not.” We also spoke to Christopher Golden about the new Hellboy Universe audio dramas.

– Via Boneville, Cartoon Books have announced “Thorn: The Complete Proto-Bone College Strips from 1982 to 1986, And Other Early Drawings,” a collection of Jeff Smith’s earliest renderings of “Bone” characters. “Thorn,” an early version of “Bone,” appeared five days a week in the Ohio State University’s student newspaper The Lantern. A few strips were printed and self-published in a book called “Thorn: Tales from The Lantern” in 1983, and another small selection was published in 2008’s “Before Bone.” Both books have long been out of print. This first official collection will be launched on Kickstarter in October and published in Spring 2024.

Publishers Weekly revealed three deals in their weekly rights report. First up, Random House Graphic has bought world rights to Kat Schneider’s debut graphic novel, “I’d Like You to Like Me.” The book follows 15-year old Meg during her time at Bible Camp, where she finds a first love that challenges her faith and worldview. Publication is set for Spring 2024.

Andrews McMeel have acquired “Magie and the Soules” by debut YA author/illustrator Jessica Ricole. The book follows 12-year old Magie as she navigates life in a magical boarding school, where she’s the only student without a Soule, a mystical companion. She must choose to either be the person she wants to be, or the person she’s expected to be. Publication is set for Fall 2025.

First Second have acquired “Always Raining Here,” a YA graphic novel by Hazel and Bell. Adapted from the webcomic of the same name, “Always Raining Here” follows two gay teenagers who must navigate school, parental expectations and each other during their courtship. Publication is set for sometime in 2025.

– Deadline reports that Lionsgate is pushing back the release date of Marc Forster’s White Bird: A Wonder Story. Originally set to launch with a limited run on August 18 before going wide on August 25, the film has been pushed back to Q4 of this year. Based on R.J. Palacio’s 2019 follow-up to Wonder, White Bird follows Bryce Gheisar’s Julian, as he seeks to turn his life around with the help of his grandmother, played by Helen Mirren, who recounts her time as a girl hiding from the Nazis in occupied France.

– Amazon have released a new trailer for Prime Video’s The Boys spin-off, Gen V. The series follows young “supes” at the Godolkin University School of Crimefighting, which is run by Vought International in the aftermath of the Compound V controversy. The trailer focuses on Jaz Sinclair’s Marie Moreau, who seemingly has the ability to manipulate blood. Gen V will premiere on September 29, 2023.

– Lionsgate have released a trailer for Dear David. The horror movie is based off former BuzzFeed cartoonist Adam Ellis’s Twitter thread of the same name, which ran from August 7 and December 12, 2017, and documented what Ellis described as an encounter with a ghost. The film stars Augustus Prew as Ellis, and will be released in theaters, and on demand October 13.

– Via Drawn & Quarterly, the Doug Wright Awards honored Phyllis Wright Thomas, who passed away on July 9, 2023. She was 93. The wife of the late Doug Wright, Wright Thomas was the inspiration behind the mother figure depicted in his popular weekly comic strip “Doug Wright’s Family,” which ran from 1949 to 1980. She was a consistent presence at the awards, and watched it on YouTube while her health declined post-COVID. You can read Seth’s touching tribute here.
