"Demon Wars: Shield of Justice" #1

– Marvel announced the second chapter of Peach Momoko’s “Demon Wars,” the four-part miniseries co-scripted by Zack Davisson, that serves as a reimagining of Marvel’s “Civil War” through the lens of Japanese folklore. Marvel’s synopsis states “Demon Wars: Shield of Justice” #1 will see Mariko Yashida become torn between two worlds, “the human world and the yokai dimension — a strange world filled with stranger creatures. The denizens of the yokai dimension need Mariko’s help to stop a war that’s brewing between two factions, one led by the Iron Samurai and his spider-like ally, and the other by a shield-wielding warrior and his panther-like right hand.” “Demon Wars: Shield of Justice” #1 will debut on November 13, 2022.

– Via ICv2, Marvel will reprint its Marvel Masterworks editions beginning in Spring 2023. The publisher will start the reprints at the beginning of the hardcover program, since many of the originals are out of print. During the the Diamond retailer panel at SDCC, Marvel SVP – Print Sales and Marketing David Gabriel said, “We had a lot of the fan base who maybe weren’t around 30 years ago to start collecting those books that are now up to volume 330.” The new editions will get new covers and updated interior art as well.

– 2000 AD revealed, in a tweet, that Peter Serafinowicz has been cast as Judge Death in the audio adaptation of John Wagner, Alan Grant & Brian Bolland’s classic “Judge Dredd: Dread Vs. Death.” Audible’s Dredd V Death will be available in September. Following last year’s launch of the 2000 AD audiobooks, Penguin Random House announced five addtional dramatizations, Dredd V. Death, Dredd: Origins, Judge Anderson: Shamballa, Rogue Trooper: Welcome to Nu-Earth, and Nemesis the Warlock. You can pre-order all of these titles here.

– Via The Beat, Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (CXC) announced that manga scholar and translator Frederik L. Schodt has won this year’s Tom Spurgeon Award. The award was introduced last year to honor those with substantial contributions to the field of comics, but are not cartoonists. Lucy Shelton Caswell, co-founder of CXC, and the founding curator of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, said “I can’t think of a better winner for this award than Schodt, and can testify myself to the crucial work Schodt did when manga was an obscure thing chattered about from one or two people and not something that sells thousands and thousands of volumes a month in chain stores around America.” She went on to praise Schodt’s 1983 book, Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics as the first serious work to examine the form in English. Schodt will receive the award in person, at CXC in Columbus, Ohio from Oct. 6-9.

– First up, in a slew of news from Deadline, Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy clarified that the series will only have two seasons after some confusion about the timeline. Gilroy said that Andor will consist of two 12-episode seasons and that episode 24 will “walk the audience directly into the first scenes of Rogue One.” Andor stars Diego Luna, Forest Whitaker, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgård, Fiona Shaw and Kyle Soller, and will premiere its first three episodes on September 21.

– While Batgirl will be getting the axe, Deadline reports Warner Bros. Discovery plans to release Joker: Folie à Deux on October 4, 2024. Joker: Folie à Deux will be directed by Todd Phillips. Production is rumored to begin in December.

– In an exclusive, Deadline reports Zosia Mamet has signed on for a role in Sony’s Madame Web. Mamet joins Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, Celeste O’Connor, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps and Adam Scott. Madame Web, based on the character created by Denny O’Neil and John Romita Jr., is set to be released October 6, 2023.

– Sony will also release Garfield on February 16, 2024. Chris Pratt voices the titular lasagna loving cat, while Samuel L. Jackson plays a new character, Vic, who happens to be Garfield’s father.

– Rounding out the Deadline news, Shea Couleé, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, has been cast in a secret role in Marvel’s Ironheart. The series will star Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, who designs the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man. The series will also star Lyric Ross, Anthony Ramos and Alden Ehrenreich.

Variety reports that the premiere of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has been pushed back from August 17 to August 18. The series will run for nine episodes and will stream weekly on Thursdays. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law stars Tatiana Maslany, Mark Ruffalo, Jameela Jamil, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Ginger Gonzaga, Tim Roth, Benedict Wong, and Charlie Cox.

– Finally, Netflix has extended a multi-year partnership with Dark Horse Entertainment which gives the streamer a first look at IP for film and TV. Variety reports two projects in development are based on comics by Matt Kindt. First up, Bang!, starring Idris Elba, a film based on the comic by Kindt and Wilfredo Torres, which will be directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde). Kindt will serve as a writer. The other project currently in development is a series based on Mind MGMT, executive produced by Curtis Gwinn (Stranger Things). Previously announced Dark Horse projects in development with Netflix include Revenge Inc. and Lady Killer.
