In case you missed it, the nominees for the 2018 Harvey Awards have been announced and drastically shortened with only six categories this year.

– Kicking things off, DC have revealed the cover of its promotional magazine, “DC Nation” #4, which promises the death of a major character. The cover features Booster Gold, Harley Quinn, Red Robin, Cyborg, Arsenal, and Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, and an ominous message: “In 21 days one of these characters will die!” The magazine will be released in comic book stores on September 5th, and it’s likely alluding to Tom King and Clay Mann’s “Heroes in Crisis,” which will feature our first look at Sanctuary, a type of counseling center for heroes suffering from PTSD. Booster Gold and Harley Quinn are expected to play large roles in the series. “Heroes in Crisis” #1 is set to debut September 26, 2018.

– Bleeding Cool have updated their story on Matt Wagner’s displeasure that DC fired his son, Brennan Wagner, as colorist of “Batman” #54. Yesterday the artist shed further light on the issue, explaining that DC offered to rehire Wagner as colorist if he were to imitate the style of Tomeu Morey, the book’s regular colorist moving forward. Responding to reports of regretting drawing the issue, Matt Wagner said “I heartily enjoyed drawing it and Brennan loved coloring it. What I regret is accepting a gig that would subject our creative efforts to such arbitrary and heavy-handed corporate intervention.” You can find Matt Wagner’s full statement here. “Batman” #54 will hit comic book shelves on September 5, 2018.

– The Beat reports that Target will rival Walmart and put out exclusive comics in a push to roll out a new line of merchandise based on Joe Books’s “Disney Princess” comic books. Target revealed five exclusive 96-page graphic novels, each reprinting stories featuring a different Disney Princess, namely Ariel, Jasmine, Rapunzel, Pocahontas and Belle. The books will cost $9.99 each and will introduce comics to a whole new audience. The rest of the line includes toothbrushes, toys, disposable diapers, underwear and soup.

– This September, Image Comics and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) will unite against censorship using variant covers. The campaign will be led by Tim Seeley (“Hack/Slash”) and Image Comics’s Publisher, Eric Stephenson. Speaking on censorship, Seeley said “I wanted to do something with my fellow Image creators to call attention to the problem, and to raise money for CBLDF to help their efforts to fight back.” Seeley will join artists like Skottie Young, Martin Morazzo, and Justin Greenwood, among many others to put out “Censored” and “Uncensored” variants of September’s Image titles. All proceeds from the campaign will benefit the CBLDF. You can find the press release and full list of variants here.

Japan Today announced that manga publishers, Shogakukan (“Weekly Shonen Sunday”), Shueisha (“Weekly Shonen Jump”), Kodansha (“Weekly Shonen Magazine”), and Kadokawa (“Young Ace”), have launched an online campaign called ‘Stop! Pirated manga’ against online piracy. The article cites data that shows significant monetary losses across Japan (estimated damage: 50 billion yen) and the United States (estimated damage: 1.3 trillion yen). The campaign website also uses a paneled comic strip to show how illegally distributed manga affects the creative process, and six different methods that people use to illegally distribute manga. For more information on the ‘Stop! Pirated manga’ campaign, head over to Japan Today.

– Sony’s Silver and Black movie, starring Black Cat and Silver Sable, has halted development and will instead separate into two films, reports Variety. Writer and director Gina Prince-Bythewood will likely depart, however she is expected to remain in a producing capacity on both films. Variety‘s report on Sony’s films in development, based on their ownership of the Spider-Man film rights, also brings word of another project starring supporting heroine Jackpot. Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters, as it is now officially being called, will kick off with the release of Venom this October.

– Deadline reports that Joivan Wade (The First Purge) has been cast as Victor Stone, AKA Cyborg in DC Universe’s Doom Patrol. Wade’s Vic Stone “struggles to maintain the connections that make him human…harnesses the curse of his cybernetic body and uses his powers as the ultimate hero for the digital age.” Serving as a follow-up to Titans, Doom Patrol brings Cyborg together with Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Woman and Crazy Jane. They are led by mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder, and will explore the weirdest corners of the DC Universe.

– Deadline also reports actress Kiana Madeira (Taken, Dark Matter) has been cast in a recurring role on The Flash season 5 as Spencer Young (aka Spin), “a young aspiring social media influencer who seizes the opportunity to make herself famous when she discovers there is a new hero [Nora Allen] in Central City.” Spin was originally a male character in the comics. The Flash returns to the CW on October 9.

– Finally, Deadline reports that Marvel have been using back door channels to try and convince Disney to reinstate James Gunn as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 since his firing. The cast penned an open letter requesting that Gunn be reinstated, however there have been mixed messages and as of now there is no definite news regarding James Gunn being reinstated. Many fans have showed an outpouring of support for Gunn and Dave Buatista has been the most vocal cast member in support of Gunn. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to be released in 2020.
