Mike Wieringo

– Kicking off, the nominees for the 2019 Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards were revealed yesterday. The Ringo Awards were established in 2017 to honor legendary comic book creator Mike Wieringo and the winners will be revealed at Baltimore Comic-Con on Saturday October 19, 2019. You can check out the nominees in all categories here. Congratulations to all finalists!

IDW Publishing is launching a three-issue miniseries beginning in November based on CMON Limited’s board game Rising Sun. The series will be written by Ron Marz and David Rodriguez and illustrated by Martin Coccolo, and will feature “exclusive content to enhance the play experience for gamers.”

– Writer Garth Ennis revealed in an interview with the Lakes International Comic Art Festival’s website that he has two new “Punisher” miniseries in the works at Marvel. The first one is called “Soviet” and will be drawn by Jacen Burrows, and was stated by Ennis to be coming out in November, though no formal announcement has been made. The second is called “Get Fury” with art by frequent collaborator Goran Parlov, and was said to be out sometime next year.

– In more Marvel Comics November news, Carol Danvers is set to take an evil turn, coupled with a costume change and everything, over in the main “Captain Marvel” series. The Kelly Thompson-written series is getting a new series artist in Lee Garbett, beginning in issue #12 for this new arc ‘The Last Avenger,’ which sees Carol on a new mission to “kill the Avengers.”

– The Before Columbus Foundation has awarded “Ms. Marvel Volume 9: Teenage Wasteland” a 2019 American Book Award. The awards, celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, exist for the “recognition for outstanding literary achievement from the entire spectrum of America’s diverse literary community.” Congratulations to writer G. Willow Wilson, illustrator Nico Leon, colorist Ian Herring, and the entire creative team on the achievement!

– In more Ms. Marvel news, Kamala Khan has been confirmed as a character for Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics upcoming Marvel’s Avengers video game. You can see Kamala during the 18-minute playthrough released at Gamescom here. The game is set for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia May 15, 2020.

– In casting news, actor Sam Littlefield (The Messengers) is joining Batwoman as a character nicknamed Mouse who will be a part of the Alice and the Wonderland Gang. The new show premieres on Sunday October 6th.

Following Tuesday’s news that talks between Disney and Sony have broken down over the gross percentages from the Spider-Man films, Sony released an updated statement clarifying that it is Disney’s decision for the partnership to be discontinued. “We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film. We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin [Feige] is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.” It was also confirmed that Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts has not signed on to direct more solo Spider-Man films.

– Finally, cartoonist Pat Moriarity and animator Seth Zeichner have collaborated on a new short film called The Realm Beyond Reason, which “brings hand-drawn comic illustrations to life using Adobe Character Animator and Adobe After Effects.” You can read more about the two’s unique partnership here.
