In case you missed it, Z2 announced a graphic novel based on Dio’s “Holy Diver,” while Scout Comics will publish the YA fantasy graphic novel “Unikorn.”
– Award-winning “March” cartoonist Nate Powell revealed the cover for his new book “Save It for Later,” out next year. The collection will contain seven of his previously unpublished comic strip stories detailing his political views and the raising of his children during the past four years. The book is set for release at Abrams Books in April of 2021.
– Long gestating X-Men spinoff The New Mutants, which has already reached a cult-like status despite not yet having been viewed by the public, is finally set to debut this Friday, after years of well publicized issues and delays, most significantly involving Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox during production. In what may come as a surprise, Disney has decided against providing screeners for advanced reviews of the film before its intended release. The A.V. Club has more on the matter, including thoughts on the ethics of reviewing a theatrical film release during a pandemic.
– The upcoming AfterShock Comics series “The Kaiju Score” has already had its film rights acquired by Sony Pictures before the first issue’s release on November 25. The comic, by writer James Patrick and artist Rem Broo, follows four desperate criminals, who have to steal a piece of valuable art stuck to the hide of a thousand ton kaiju. AfterShock Comics’ Lee Kramer and Jon Kramer will be among the film’s producers.
– The highly anticipated video game Marvel’s Avengers from Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix is set for a “War Table” live stream on September 1st. Expect a look at “numerous world-exclusive reveals, such as an in-depth look at the first post-launch story season for the Avengers Initiative, and the unveiling of an additional post-launch playable hero.” The title is scheduled to be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, on September 4.
– Marvel kicked off the new X-Men crossover series ‘X of Swords’ with a new trailer. The event, which has been described as the biggest “since ‘House of X,'” begins with “X of Swords: Creation” on September 23, and runs through all the X-titles until “X of Swords: Destruction” on November 25.
– Finally, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that, thanks to its use in Stargirl‘s “Brainwave Jr.,” Calum Scott’s cover of Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own” topped their TV Songs Chart for July 2020. The chart, based on data from Tunefind and Nielsen Music, demonstrates which songs become popular after their use in recent TV shows. The list was also dominated by tracks used in Netflix’s Warrior Nun and The Umbrella Academy.
