– “Bitter Root” artist Sanford Greene and “Joker: Killer Smile” scribe Jeff Lemire head up a star studded list of nominees for the 2020 Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards aka the Ringo Awards, slated for Saturday, October 24, 2020. Greene is one of five named in the Best Best Artist or Penciller category, while Lemire stands nominated with four others in the Best Writer category. “Bitter Root” (Image Comics) is also nominated in two other categories: Best Series, and Best Single Issue or Story.

– November marks the return of “Amelia Rules!” graphic novelist Jimmy Gownley. The upcoming release “7 Good Reasons Not to Grow Up,” about the hero of the Greycliff Academy – Kirby Finn – who’s secretly the snarky mastermind behind the titular series of videos that expose how being an adult isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, is aimed at audiences 8 – 12 years. The new title, published by Scholastic Graphix, marks Gownley’s first publication since 2014’s autobiographical “The Dumbest Idea Ever.” “7 Good Reasons Not to Grow Up” will be available in paperback, hardcover, and ebook.

Marvel Comics kicks off its 81st birthday celebrations on August 31, 2020. Fans worldwide can look forward to a slew of goodies from the celebration, starting with a “Miles Morales: Spider-Man” #18 variant cover by artist Ron Lim and colorist Israel Silva. They can also snag limited edition shirts and apparel featuring the commemorative Lim/Silva artwork through the Marvel Design Vault on Amazon, and on key retailers’ e-commerce sites. Assemble online with a legion of fans on the big day for a series of marvelous digital events, including This Week in Marvel, Women of Marvel, Marvel’s Pull List, Marvel’s How to Draw LIVE, and Marvel’s Let’s Play.

– Manga and anime pop culture icon “Ghost in the Shell” (literally) entered a new stage: an original adaptation of the cyberpunk franchise, melding traditional Japanese Noh theatre with modern virtual reality tech, was hosted last weekend at Tokyo’s Setagaya Public Theatre. The experience involved director Shutaro Oku, Ghost in the Shell: SAC writer Jun’ichi Fujisaku, and noted VR researcher Masahiko Inami.

– Season 1 of the CBS All Access hit Star Trek: Discovery is going boldly where it hasn’t before: a broadcast debut on parent network CBS just three weeks ahead of season 3. Season 1 of Discovery will premiere on CBS September 24, at 10 p.m. ET. Fans of the show looking for a refresher may be disappointed as Discovery will be edited so that it is suitable for the cable format.

– Vincent Paronnaud’s Hunted is one of three recent acquisitions by the horror-centric streaming service Shudder (owned by AMC Networks). Paronnaud aka Winshluss, a French comic book artist and filmmaker, is perhaps best known for co-directing the acclaimed 2007 animated film Persepolis. Hunted joins two other female-centric horror flicks; Elza Kephart’s Slaxx, and Natasha Kermani’s Lucky. Shudder nabbed the U.S. rights at the Fantasia International Film Festival.

– WarnerMedia knocked it out of the park with its digital convention DC FanDome: according to company officials, the event racked up over 22 million views across 220 countries and territories over its 24-hour run on Saturday August 22, 2020. It also reportedly dominated on social media, trending on Twitter and YouTube in 53 and 62 markets respectively.

– Finally, parents can now “tap into their superpower” thanks to DC, parent company AT&T, and ScreenReady.com. The initiative features the Justice League Action incarnations of iconic superheroes Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg in a new 30-second spot that educates and enlists every “parent superheroes” to establish parental controls on household connected devices, and visit ScreenReady.com for assistance.
