– Drawn & Quarterly has revealed the cover and title for “Roaming,” the new graphic novel from the award-winning team of cousins Mariko and Jillian Tamaki. First announced as an untitled project back in February 2021, “Roaming” follows college freshmen and high school BFFs Zoe and Dani as they meet up in the place they’ve always wanted to visit: New York City. The pair is joined by Dani’s classmate Fiona as they traverse the city, “gleefully falling into tourist traps, pondering so-called great works of art, sidestepping creeps, and eating lots and lots of pizza (folded in half, of course).” Mariko and Jillian Tamaki previously collaborated on the acclaimed graphic novels “Skim” and “This One Summer,” both of which won the Ignatz Award for Outstanding Graphic Novel. “This One Summer” also won the Eisner Award for Best New Graphic Novel, and became the first graphic novel to receive a Caldecott Honor. “Roaming” is set to reach stores in Fall 2023.

– An intergalactic story arc is kicking off in Marvel’s Infinity Comic “Avengers Unlimited.” Nigerian comic creators Murewa Ayodele and Dotun Akande are taking Captain Marvel, Iron Man, War Machine, Ironheart, and Captain America to an alien world for the storyline ‘Kaiju War.’ The five-part story arc kicked off this week in “Avengers Unlimited Infinity Comic” #9, with updates coming every Tuesday.

– Cartoonist Maia Kobabe’s graphic novel “Gender Queer” scored a victory this week in its ongoing legal battle. Via The Beat, a Virginia judge dismissed the lawsuit, which was brought by Virginia state delegate Tim Anderson aiming to have sale of the book blocked through the state’s obscenity laws. “Gender Queer” was being challenged alongside Sara J. Maas’s fantasy novel A Court of Mist and Fury. Judge Pamela S. Baskervill granted a motion by Kobabe’s attorneys and the attorneys representing other Virginia booksellers and the national retailer Barnes & Noble, finding that the law Anderson used to bring his lawsuit was unconstitutional under both the U.S. and the Virginia Constitution. Jeff Trexler of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund posted a thread breaking down the technical aspects of the decision, and outlining what might come next for the case.

– The Ringo Awards have announced their 2022 slate of nominees. The winners, which will be voted on by comic book industry creatives, will be presented during Baltimore Comic-Con later this fall. “Locke & Key/The Sandman Universe: Hell & Gone,” “The Many Deaths of Laila Starr,” “Something is Killing the Children,” “Stray Dogs,” and “Syphon” earned nods for Best Series, with “Ballad for Sophie,” “Blowback,” “Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done?,” “Djeliya,” “Save it for Later,” and “This is Where We Fall” picking up nominations for Best Original Graphic Novel. You can find a full list of nominees here. The awards will be presented at Baltimore Comic-Con on Saturday, October 29.

– Fan-favorite animated series Harley Quinn has seemingly survived the turmoil at Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO Max, as Variety reports that the show has been renewed for a fourth season. Along with the renewal comes the news that consulting producer Sarah Peters has been promoted to executive producer, and will take over showrunning duties from creators Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker. The show follows the titular anti-hero (Kaley Cuoco) as she breaks up with the Joker (Alan Tudyk) and forms her own crew alongside Poison Ivy (Lake Bell). Season 3 is currently airing, with its finale scheduled for September 15.

– The manga publisher Shueisha has partnered with MediBang for the new platform Manga Plus Creators by Shueisha. Via Crunchyroll, the free platform “aims to let English- and Spanish-speaking creators upload their works and share them with others around the world,” offering prizes and potential publication on Manga Plus and the Japanese Jump+ service for the best received submissions. The top 5 works submitted through the program each month will be nominated for award recognition, with Shueisha editors reviewing them and selecting the winners.

– Actress Regan Aliyah (XO, Kitty) has joined the cast of the upcoming Disney+ series Ironheart. Via Deadline, Aliyah’s role remains undisclosed. The six-episode series comes from creator Chinaka Hodge, and is set to star Dominique Thorne as the titular Marvel character Riri Williams. Aliyah joins the previously announced cast members Anthony Ramos, Lyric Ross, Alden Ehrenreich, Manny Montana, Shea Couleé, and Zoe Terakes. Ironheart is set to premiere in late 2023.

– Finally, comic artist Mike Deodato, Jr. has posted a statement on Twitter clarifying what he calls a joke that “got out of hand” over the physicality of an actor in the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. CBR has some additional context about the now deleted tweet, in which Deodato criticized actor Tenoch Huerta’s body by comparing it to his own. “You can tell somebody screwed things up when a character from a movie looks in worst [sic] shape than the 60 years old artist who drew him,” Deodato posted on Instagram, along with a side-by-side comparison picture of Huerta (who plays Namor in the upcoming MCU film) rising from the water and a seemingly naked Deodato. Deodato received criticism and accusations of racism from fans over the post. Deodato’s later statement clarified that his intention was to mock “the comic book character, not the actor.”
