In case you missed it, the Joe Shuster Awards took place over the weekend, we did an interview with Ben Jelter about his series “Heliosphere,” Image Comics announced “20XX,” a new comic from Jonathan Luna and Lauren Keely, and Dark Horse Comics has partnered with 12-Gauge for the series “Kill Whitey Donovan.”

— Vampironica will return in the new mini-series “Vampironica: New Blood” by writers Frank Tieri and Michael Moreci, and artist Audrey Mok. The new Archie Horror series deals with the consequences of “Jughead: The Hunger Vs. Vampironica,” which ends in early October. The series is set to be “a coming-of-age story … with some cool twists and turns and a whole bunch of bloody horror,” and will pave the way for a full blown vampire war. The first issue arrives on December 4th.

— Dan Slott and Valerio Schiti’s “Tony Stark: Iron Man” has been cancelled and will end with issue #19 in December. The series was Slott’s first major series following the end of his eight year run on “The Amazing Spider-Man,” and the premature cancellation brings the fate of his ‘Iron Man 2020’ event into question. The final issue will be illustrated by Schiti and co-written by “Champions” scribe Jim Zub. Iron Man’s future remains uncertain after the series’s end.

— The cancellations over at Marvel continue with “Future Foundation,” which will conclude following issue #5 this December. The announcement came as a surprise to the series’s writer Jeremy Whitley, who “had no idea [the news] was going to break today,” and confirmed that the series was being cancelled for financial reasons, rather than story decisions. The choice was made following the final order cut off for issue #2 and the first week sales of #1, which showed underwhelming returns. Despite the premature cancellation, Whitley urged readers to continue reading right until the last issue.

Robert Venditti has announced that he will be the new lead writer on “Superman Giant” this January. He will be joined by an assortment of artists including Paul Pelletier, Andrew Hennessy, Adriano Lucas, and Clayton Cowles. The series is an oversized comic which began as one of four Wal-Mart exclusive series back in 2018. Now it’s the only one that remains exclusive to Walmart. Venditti is known for his work on “X-O Manowar” at Valiant and the recent “Hawkman” series for DC. Venditti will write the comic from issue #19 onwards.

— The Kubert School, one of the leading technical schools for graphic artists and cartoonists, is reportedly under new management. Anthony Marques, an artist and manager of Dewey’s Comic City in New Jersey, will also now be the owner of the Kubert School. Having graduated in 2011 under the late Joe Kubert, Marques is now committed to “continue Joe’s legacy to inspire future artists and ensure they receive the best art-related education possible.” Andy Kubert, the son of the school’s founder, will continue at the school as a student instructor and a member of the advisory board.

— This Saturday, September 21st, DC will light up the night in 12 major cities internationally with their own Bat-Signal. The event will honour the 80th anniversary of Batman. This will be paired with comic signings, fun runs and free comics in even more cities internationally. In addition, Batman creators like Scott Snyder, Peter J. Tomasi, Brad Walker, James Tynion IV and Dan DiDio will host a panel and signing at the Barnes & Noble Union Square in New York.

— Over on the small screen, Netflix has released the first teaser for their “high school apocalypse dramedy” Daybreak. The clip features Principal Burr (Matthew Broderick) narrating over a montage of different student groups, flashing between their high school status quo and their post apocalyptic alter-egos. The trailer also provides the first footage of the confident protagonist Josh Wheeler (Colin Ford), and Sam Dean (Sophie Simnett), who plays “the most widely admired girl at Glendale High.” The show is “part samurai saga, part endearing coming-of-age story, and part Battle Royale,” and will premiere on October 4th at NYCC before making its worldwide debut on October 24th.

Deadline reported that Steven DeKnight is stepping down from his position as showrunner on Netflix’s upcoming series Jupiter’s Legacy, an adaptation of the comic of the same name. De Knight will be leaving in mid-production due to creative differences, however Netflix does not believe any hiatus will be needed while the new creative team take charge. The series is set to be the first in a line of “Millarworld” properties that will adapt the various works of Mark Millar. DeKnight has previously worked with Netflix as the showrunner on Daredevil, and directed the first episode of Jupiter’s Legacy. The series follows a group of 1930s superheroes being overtaken by the younger generation, and has an undetermined release date in 2020.

— Robert Downey Jr. may be set to reprise his role as Iron Man in 2020’s Black Widow. The rumor was originally mentioned rather casually in a Deadline article about this year’s Saturn Awards. Scarlett Johansson’s first titular superhero film is set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, so a cameo appearance by Robert Downey Jr. could come and go without a resurrection for either character. Black Widow makes its way into theaters on May 1st.
