Welcome back to The Rundown, our daily breakdown on comic news stories we missed from the previous day. Have a link to share? Email our team at rundown@multiversitycomics.com.
– This is hardly unexpected news at this point, but the recently wrapped up New York Comic Con was the best attended it has ever been, with over 180,000 people passing through the Jacob Javits Center of the course of four days. While I wouldn’t say it was exactly roomy, for some reason this year the crowds seemed far more manageable, even on Saturday. One retailer I spoke to credited that to the increased popularity of panels, specifically non-comics specific panels that people wait hours and hours to get into.
– Michiyo Yasuda, the color designer and collaborator of Hayao Miyazaki, has passed away at the age of 77. She leaves behind a stunning body of work, as she was a hugely important part of the Studio Ghibli look.
– Scarlet Johansson still wants to do a Black Widow film, but admits that the clock is ticking due to her age/willingness to push her body to the limits that would be required.
– Sarah Winifred Searle has announced a new graphic novel, due out in 2019: “Thimble” is about a young girl moving from rural Indiana to Chicago.
– Michael Kupperman is working on a graphic novel about his dad, who was a famous “Quiz Kid” in the 1940s. The book is titled “All the Answers.”
– “God Country,” a new Image book from Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw, was supposed to be announced at NYCC, but wasn’t, only having been previewed by Entertainment Weekly.
– And, finally, although informally discussed in the past, it appears to be official: Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo are reuniting for a big DC event in the summer of 2017, and Batman will be a major player in it.
