ICYMI, we have an exclusive preview of “Midnight Suns” #2, due out next week from Marvel.

– The Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics committee unveiled the nominees for the seventh annual award. Finalists this year include “Himawari House” by Harmony Becker, “Swim Team” by Johnnie Christmas, and “Adora and the Distance” by Marc Bernadin and Ariela Kristantina. The shortlist was decided by a panel of comic and animation professionals, led by legendary writer, and friend of the late McDuffie, Marv Wolfman. Actor Phil LaMarr will host the virtual ceremony to announce the winner.

– Mad Cave Studios YA imprint Maverick will publish “Paper Planes,” an original graphic novel following two high school friends coping with tragedy at a summer camp for troubled kids. Writer Jennie Wood and artist Dozer Draws, who are both non-binary, draw from their own experiences for the story. “This book allowed me to write my first nonbinary character while I was coming out as nonbinary,” Wood says of the project. Dozer Draws calls it “what I would have loved to read during my teen years.” “Paper Planes” will be available May 2023. It can be preordered here.

– CBC’s “Essex County” adaptation announced five cast members. Molly Parker, Brian J. Smith, Stephen McHattie, Kevin Durand, and Finlay Wojtak-Hissong will star in the upcoming series, based on the Top Shelf series created by Jeff Lemire. Lemire co-wrote the adaptation and serves as showrunner. Shooting wrapped on September 30 in North Bay, Ontario. It’s set to premiere on CBC TV and CBC Gem in Winter 2023.

– DC and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment have announced Legion of Super-Heroes, an upcoming animated feature that sees Supergirl attend Legion Academy in the 31st century, and battle the Dark Circle. Meg Donnelly (The Winchesters) voices Supergirl/Kara with Harry Shum Jr. (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Brainaic 5. It also features the return of Darren Criss as Superman, Matt Bomer as the Flash, and Jensen Ackles as Batman.

Warrior Nun will return to Netflix for its second season on Thursday, November 10. The new trailer shows us the angel Adriel, whom Ava and the Samaritans must stop from taking over the planet. Warrior Nun is based on the comics character of Warrior Nun Areala, created by Ben Dunn, and premiered in 2020.

– A new trailer for the upcoming animated series Transformers: EarthSpark reveals the show will be taking a leaf out of IDW Publishing’s comics, with a post-war setting where a reformed Megatron is an ally of Optimus Prime. EarthSpark, featuring Game of Thrones and Hot Fuzz‘s Rory McCann as the voice of Megatron, premieres on Paramount+ Friday, November 11.

– Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales swings from PlayStation to PC on Friday, November 18. A new trailer details the improvements to the new port, including ray tracing and unlocked framerates. The game is available for preorder on Steam and the Epic Games Store for $49.99. Preorder bonuses include the T.R.A.C.K. suit and Into the Spider-Verse suit, early access to the Gravity Well gadget, and three extra skillpoints.

– Finally, Marvel will celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary with a series of variant covers featuring the studio’s classic animated characters. Each one will feature Mickey Mouse and others in a recreation of an iconic Marvel cover, with the first being an “Avengers” #4 mock-up by Lorenzo Pastrovicchio and Valeria de Sanctis. The covers will be on issues of “The Amazing Spider-Man,” with the “Avengers” recreation gracing issue #17 on January 11, 2023. There will be twelve, released monthly. The 100th anniversary of Disney (originally known as Disney Brothers Studio)’s founding will be on October 16, 2023.
