Welcome back to The Rundown, our daily breakdown on comic news stories we missed from the weekend. Have a link to share? Email our team at rundown@multiversitycomics.com.
– In Malaysia, cartoonist Zulkifli Anwar Ulhaque, aka Zunar, was arrested for lampooning the Prime Minister, Najib Razak. The charge was sedition and the arrest happened at the Georg Town Literary Festival. Najib has been under fire for embezzling billions. On top of this, there has been a ban on any political cartoon books, especially those mocking Razak or his wife.
At the risk of editorializing, before we shake our heads and say this can only happen in Malaysia, just consider the US President-elect’s blatant criminality and feeble ego that doesn’t want pictures like these being used. Hopefully this isn’t an indicator of things to come. Hopefully Zunar gets released soon.
– In the wake of the US election, Alison Bechdel, the MacArthur prize-winning cartoonist behind “Fun Home” and “Are You My Mother?”, returned to her seminal strip, “Dykes to Watch Out For”. It’s been eight years since Bechdel worked on these characters.
– Drew Ford is attempting to bring Sam Glanzman’s “Voyage to the Deep” back into print. This will mark its first collected edition ever, and the first time its been reprinted in any regard since 1962. “Voyage to the Deep” will be the third book released under IDW’s It’s Alive! imprint.
– DJ China White and True Heart Master have turned their love of Doctor Strange into hip-hop songs.
– Finally, add some jams to your life with “Seagulls (Stop It Now)”, the new hit from Jedi Master Yoda. He’s a little pitchy but that’s okay.
